Discipleship Council

Leading up to our November Charge Conference, many of you learned about the new Discipleship Council.  The objectives of this new council are to:

Strengthen church discipleship across members in four key areas: spiritual growth, mission, evangelism and fellowship

Encourage participation and involvement of more members in the life, programs, and ministry of the church

Maximize Zion’s full potential as a church in our

community and the world around us!

The council was kicked off in December and has planned some exciting events for early 2008.  The council is organized around two types of teams – Discipleship Coordinators and Laity Teams.

There are four Discipleship Coordinator areas: spiritual growth, mission, evangelism and fellowship.  The primary purpose of each of these coordinating groups is to help ensure that Zion members of all age groups are presented with plenty of opportunities to growth closer to Christ in each of the four discipleship areas.  These folks are the idea generators.

In additional to the Discipleship Coordinating Groups, there are four Laity Teams centered around the four different age groups of the church: child, youth, young adults / families, and adults. The primary purpose of each of the Laity Teams is to select which opportunities would best meet the needs of their respective age group, and then plan and execute that opportunity for the respective church members.  These folks are the planning and executing body for there respective age group.

What’s the end result? ....

MORE opportunities for MORE church members to get MORE involved in the life of the church, and growth MORE as a disciple of Christ.

Doesn’t that sound great? I know those that have become involve with the Discipleship Council already are all very excited about the possibilities for our church.

But how is this all going to work?  That’s were you come in.  The success of this effort relies on congregational involvement.  The more folks we get involved, the more ideas we can generated and the more things we can accomplish.  If you have always thought we need a stronger youth program, then come get involved.  If you have always thought we need to do more to reach out to our community in mission and evangelism, then come get involved.

Take a moment and look at the descriptions of the Discipleship Teams.  Use the contact information to let the leaders know you are ready to be on their teams!

            Yours in Discipleship for Christ,

Matt Needy,   Chair of the Discipleship Council
