Hamburgers and hotdogs are being donated, (thank you, Lombardo family!) and a sign-up sheet is posted in the Narthex where you can volunteer to bring in salads/side dishes, baked goods, drinks, rolls, condiments and paper goods. The women and teens will be barbequing for the men this time!! Please plan to attend this very special day!

Lastly, we would like to thank all of the teachers who have volunteered throughout this Sunday School year and for the many others who have come forward to help with Mission Sunday and Movie Sunday.

Junior High Youth Group

The Junior Youth Group has had a fantastic first year overall. There were some kinks that had to be worked out here and there but it did come together nicely. God was definitely helping us as we made our way through this first year. We have had some angels in the church helping us too (Barbara & Nadia)! We have had a terrific year because of the fantastic group of kids we have. Well, we are not finished yet.

We hiked up Turkey Mountain on May 25. Gorgeous day! Wonderful view of NYC skyline and surrounding area! Evan, Ashley, Nick and Alec ran almost the whole trail. Wendi and Gail lagged way behind! Couldn't have asked for a better day. Next, our Juniors will be preparing and serving for Jan Peek on June 1st. After returning from Jan Peek we are going to join the Sr. Group for a joint meeting. We hope all of you can join us for the Breakfast at Chili's on Saturday, June 7th. On June 8th, don't forget about the Sunday School Awards at church. We will be practicing for Youth Sunday on Sat. June 28th from 12-2pm. YOUTH SUNDAY, JUNE 29th.  We will finish off the school year with a Pool Party with the Sr. Group at the Sheehan's house, more info to come.

Over the summer we hope to get together at the Vicari house for some fun and who knows what else might happen. We hope everyone has a wonderful, safe and FUN summer.

In God's Loving Name,

Wendi and Gail

CHOIR NOTES

I've been pondering what to write for quite some time now—actually since I made my decision to step down back in January...yes, January. Maybe in that month I was feeling a little burnt out coming on the heels of Christmas, but as God always seems to guide me through life, He had been nudging me again and I felt peaceful about that decision.

I've been playing, conducting, singing for YUMC since October 1998, two weeks after my family joined the church and Vicki Gambino came frantically running up to me after a service asking me to “fill-in temporarily” because their organist had just quit. I had just finished up a two-year contract at a small Presbyterian church in Cold Spring and wasn't really looking for organist work, but it found me! (God's nudging again!)

I've worked with four different ministers since coming here, playing 50 Sunday's a year (now down to 48) plus extra services throughout the year. I've been honored to play and sing for some of your weddings and many, many funerals, sharing both tears and smiles.

I actually have been playing for church services since I was 15 year’s old and substituted as a music director in my 20's. I've been a steady Music Director as a profession since 1996 and feel it is time to take a little break and work on some personal music endeavors.

I don't feel as though this is a goodbye, only a slight change in the Sunday to Sunday “line-up”. I can now be the extra hands for the piano or organ that I haven't had and the built-in substitute!

When I started with the Jr. Choir, I had some very young members—from an 8-year-old Rasheeda (now 18!) and a 9-year-old Samantha Lopez, to a very mischievous 9-year-old Michael Cruz, to cute six-year-olds Jenna & Molly and seven-year-old Andrea (all asking to sing solos) and Jenny Spadaccia, Gabby Arroyo, Tricia Cacace, Sadie Zukowski, on down to a very little Stephanie Palmentiero (4 years old in a soccer uniform, falling asleep at practice!). My own kids, Josh & Heather were only 4 & 6 and would hide behind my piano, sometimes in their pajamas, waiting for Pat to pick them up and take them home on his way from work. Through the years I've had many other children join me—Ashley and Brooke McDermott, Kiersten Sheehan, Becky Severance, and so many others. It's been a joy to watch each and every one of them growing up and continuing to blossom.

The Sr. Choir in 1998 actually had 3 tenors! Imagine that! Bill Van Gieson, Dick DeMan and SeJune Hong were a formidable trio. Dale DeMan, Sue Spano and Martu Richards have been with me since the very beginning and are still singing along with many others who have come and gone—again, it has been wonderful working with each and every one of you.

I could go on about special music, soloists, cantatas, contemporary services, giggling chime choir members and so, so much more. Of course, the best part of the ministry is you, the congregant. As I've said many times over, all musicians need ears to listen and appreciate them! That has been you and your many years of support and I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart.

May God continue to bless the Music Ministry of YUMC and also all of you!

Musically in Him,

Debbie Norberto

Annual Conference

The Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church is being held June 11th - June 14th at Hofstra University on Long Island.

Pastor Roy, Shirley Bollin & Frank Hetzer will represent YUMC.

General Conference Highlights

This gathering occurs every four years where clergy and laity delegates representing UMC annual conferences from around the world gather to participate in unique and powerful worship services, hear sermons from many Bishops, honor mission work, and pass legislation – to name just some of what goes on. This time, the conference took place in Fort Worth, Texas from late April to early May.

Some of the legislative highlights include:

passed 23 amendments for the creation of a U.S. regional conference

agreed to reduce the number of bishops by one in four of the five U.S. jurisdictions, to fund needs for bishops in other countries (eff. Jan. ’09)

rejected changes to the UM Social Principles that would say church members disagree on homosexuality, “upheld the 2004 Book of Discipline’s language of homosexual practice,” and approved a new resolution to oppose homophobia and heterosexism, among other changes.

rejected three petitions calling for church divestment from companies in the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza strip, and East Jerusalem.

approved petitions supporting Tibet’s struggle for independence from Chinese rule and “security, stability, and self determination” for the people of Taiwan. In addition, a resolution was passed supporting human rights and justice in Sudan.

adopted resolutions urging justice for migrant workers worldwide.

revised the mission statement of the UMC to read “The mission of the church is to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

added “witness” in the promise new members make.

approved a full communion agreement with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – not a full merger, but a recognition of each other’s mission and ministry.

And so much more… For more information, please refer to the May 16, 2008 of the United Methodist Reporter (section B of The Vision), or contact Pastor Roy.

Summer Coffee Hour

We would like to have coffee hour/fellowship during the summer months. In order to make this possible, we need you!

There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex for July and August.

No need for hot coffee on a hot day! Ice tea or lemonade and cookies will be fine. Thank you for your help.

                      The Membership & Evangelism Committee

A REMINDER FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

We would appreciate you keeping up with your pledges and offerings during the summer, possibly paying in advance of time away on vacation. Then we can keep up with paying our expenses. Thank you!

As you all know, we had a tremendous turnaround financially last year.  We were able to meet all of our financial obligations, including apportionments!!!  Unfortunately, the enormous increase in oil costs has put us $6,623 behind so far this year.  As you can see from the summary below, although our income is higher than expected, our expenses are even higher!  As always, we are looking into ways to keep expenses as low as possible.  Here are some additional ways to help:

-         Consider giving to our oil fund (even if you already have)

-         Tithe your tax rebate check (give 10% to God).

-         Tithe your economic stimulus check (if 40 families gave $100 each, that would be $4,000!!!)

-         If you are behind on your pledges/giving, catch up

-         If you plan to go away during the summer, pay your pledges/offerings early or mail them in

(Remember, even when we are on vacation, God is still providing us love and grace!)

More & more younger families are becoming a part of our church!

We need to resurrect our childcare for the nursery. Amy Giles is our coordinator and has put a creative sign-up board (thanks Noah & Ian!) in the narthex. Please sign-up and/or contact Amy @ 302-6806.

Mission Opportunity:

UM VIM Biloxi Team 75

August 9 - 16 2008

The 75th United Methodist Volunteer in Mission (UM VIM) Team is headed to Biloxi, MS for a week in August to continue Hurricane Katrina relief work. Our ministry is a "ministry of presence" and our presence in Biloxi in all its forms will be a blessing. Based on the skill set of the team we will be given an assignment, which might include tear-down, build, or finishing work at one or more sites or even at St. Paul’s UMC. If you feel the call to serve others in our national community, be a part of the team. We have experienced team, base/cook, and site/tool coordinators – all other positions are open – adult, college, and high school ages (with parent) are all welcome on this trip.

The work week is Monday – Friday, with worship in the community Sunday. Other activities include being in the community, a community night with our families, daily devotions, a dinner out at a barbeque restaurant, and a closing ceremony. We stay at St. Paul’s UMC Fellowship Hall, which is about 15 minutes from the airport in Biloxi. We fly there on Saturday August 9th and fly home on Saturday August 16th.

The cost to volunteers is $500 which covers airfare, food, and ground transport while in Biloxi. Deposit needed by June 2 and full payment by July 1. You’ll also need a small amount of spending money for the dinner out. If you’re interested in serving on Biloxi Team 75, please see or call Christy Pischedda at 914-243-9790, or e-mail capischedda@optonline.net with Biloxi Team 75 in the message title.

A LETTER FROM VERNA KWIATKOWSKI

To those who know me as Verna Mae, teacher of the Bible Basics courses and former pastor; to those who know me as Marty Ford’s mother; and to those who do not know me at all: I am writing this introduction with the hope that God will be glorified by our connecting our lives in this way.

Five years ago I was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), which cripples the body, but leaves the mind intact. I presently live at Sky View Nursing Home in Croton, unable to walk or talk.

My ministry has changed from a spoken ministry to a written one. My writings (available on my website) are a mix of theology, autobiography, anecdotes and humor, and music. I invite you to visit the site.

May 9, 2008

Dear United Methodists of the New York Annual Conference:

I greet you in the name of Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace, Healer of our brokenness and Hope of the world!

We have all heard about the terrible destruction and loss of life wrought by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (formerly Burma) on May 2nd. As of today, this storm, which is the worst natural disaster in Myanmar's history, has left more than 23,000 dead and another 42,000 missing, according to officials of the Myanmar government. The United Nations says that an estimated 1.5 million persons have been affected. The United Nations is concerned that due to lack of safe food and drinking water the death toll could rise above 100,000.

You will not be surprised to learn that UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is already preparing to respond to the need in Myanmar. Working through partners such as Church World Service, one of the few agencies with permits to work in Myanmar, UMCOR is well positioned to get the aid to the right places to make a difference in the name of Jesus Christ as soon as possible. We are so blessed to have UMCOR. As you know, thanks to our shared ministry apportionments, every penny given to UMCOR results in a loving gift where the need is greatest.

Please ask your church members to pray earnestly for the people of Myanmar, particularly for those who have lost their loved ones, its government, and for the international community who is ready to offer assistance.

Also, I urge you to take a special offering for Myanmar relief through UMCOR. Your church's offering may be submitted with your regular monthly shared ministry report. The Advance number is 3019674, Myanmar Emergency. As always, one hundred percent of their contributions will go directly to make a difference in the lives of the people of Myanmar.

Your Partner in Hope,

Jeremiah J. Park

May 23, 2008

Dear United Methodists of the New York Annual Conference:

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Once again, a part of God's beloved earth has been ravaged by natural disaster. The May 12 earthquake near Chengdu, China has resulted in the deaths of more than 41,000 persons. More than 32,000 people are still missing and 275,000 are injured. Some five million are homeless. Gratefully, once again, on our behalf UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is finding ways to share Christ's love with those in need.

Within five hours of the earthquake, the Amity Foundation, a Chinese social service organization and partner of our General Board of Global Ministries, had sent staff to initiate relief efforts. According to an UMCOR news update, Amity is working to provide food for about 16,000 people and will distribute 8,000 tarpaulins and quilts - with specific focus on the severely affected provinces of Gansu, Sha'anxi and Sichuan. Long-term recovery plans include the rebuilding of 600 homes, 10 schools and five clinics, as well as the rehabilitation of destroyed water and irrigation systems.

The Rev. Yuan Shiguo, general secretary of the Sichuan Christian Council, reported that many churches have been destroyed and members of the Christian community hurt in the earthquake. I would like to invite all of you to keep praying for our churches, Christians, and our people, said Rev. Shiguo.

Indeed, let us pray for our brother and sister Christians in China and for all the Chinese people and their government, and particularly for those who are suffering directly from the effects of the earthquake. Let us, also, respond with our generous financial gifts. Your church's offering may be submitted with your regular monthly shared ministry report. The Advance number is #982450, International Disaster Response, China Earthquake. As always, one hundred percent of our contributions will go directly to make a difference in the lives of the people of China.

Your Partner in Hope,
Jeremiah J. Park

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Yorktown United Methodist Church as the charity you want to support. Or, even easier, just click on this GoodSearch icon and you'll automatically sign in as YUMC.

GoodSearch: You Search...We Give!

(In the future, this icon will continue to be located at the top of the Announcements page.)

Look at the examples below of how much money we can potentially raise for our church:
