Community
Development Outreach Ministries is a mission project of the West
Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Avesta Drive
Community Center and Coal Branch
Heights Community Center -
provide after-school, weekend, and summer programming for children
in the local area, as well as serving as a place where residents
can come together to discuss issues and problems, and learn about
services available in their local area.
Heart and Hand
House of South Charleston--provides assistance for individuals and families in
need. Assistance includes but is not limited to food,
clothing, school supplies, rental and utility assistance, and
furniture.
The Tutoring
Program - provides training
to local churches and community organizations who want to set up
free tutoring programs for children; acts as a referral program
for children in need of tutoring
Summer Day
Camps - located at the Avesta
Drive and Coal Branch Heights Community Centers is open to all
children free of charge.
Campership
Program - provides
transportation and funding to enable low-income children to attend
camp for a week during the summer at Spring Heights Education
Center.
New Life Camp for
Young Mothers - a
weeklong camping experience for young mothers and their children.
This experience is offered free of charge to young mothers usually
between the ages of 15 and 19. All expenses are paid including the
child's needs.
Housing
Rehabilitation Program -
coordinate youth work teams to make housing repairs free of charge
for elderly residents in need of assistance. The work teams
consist of youth from various states, churches, and Universities.
Some of the work teams have included students from Roncalli High
School in Indiana and Notre Dame University.
Youth Video
Project - provides youth
with the skills and equipment to produce, shoot, direct, and
distribute videos on issues they are concerned with. The Youth
Video Project was invited to conduct a workshop and asked to
present their recently completed video on racism at the West
Virginia Civil Rights Summit.
