The Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns promotes
ecumenical activity between churches of various traditions and peaceful
relations with other religions. We do so through personal participation
in some of the groups mentioned below.
We also provide monetary support through the Conference budget.
Our web site will be under constant construction, but we hope that the
information available here is helpful. Links to other sites are found
on the home page.
Through our conference budget, CCUIC supports:
· West Virginia Council of Churches
· Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC)
· Commission on Religion in Appalachia
· Dialogues with other Christian Traditions
· Support of Interfaith Initiatives

West Virginia Council of
Churches
Founded in the nineteenth century, the West Virginia Council of
Churches is a body of over thirty different Christian traditions
dedicated to improving the lives of all West Virginians.
Its work includes legislative advocacy, family concerns, prison
ministry, interfaith relations, faith and order discussions, Habitat
for Humanity, and other praiseworthy projects.
Churches Uniting in Christ
(CUIC)
Formerly known as the Consultation on Church Union (COCU), Churches
Uniting in Christ is a framework for showing to the world what we truly
are -- the one Body of Jesus Christ.
Each communion retains its own identity and decision-making structures,
but they also have pledged before God to draw closer in sacred things
-- including regular sharing of the Lord's Supper and common mission,
especially a mission to combat racism together. Each church also
committed itself to undertake an intensive dialogue toward the day when
ministers are authorized to serve and lead worship, when invited, in
each of the communions.
Commission on Religion in
Appalachia (CORA)
The Commission on Religion in Appalachia is a partnership of church
denominations and community groups who are working together to confront
the structural causes of injustice in Appalachia.
Dialogue with Other Christian
Traditions
For over three decades, CCUIC has actively conducted dialogues with the
Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. This dialogue has
produced several groundbreaking documents on Christian Marriage, Health
and Wholeness, and Baptism. Current discussions focus on the meaning of
Eucharist (Holy Communion) within our traditions. A new dialogue with
the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church) is planned.
Interfaith Initiatives
Following the horrific events of September 11, members of the
Commission were involved in planning and conducting interfaith services
throughout the state. Commission members also helped arrange a dialogue
between law enforcement officers and the Islamic community in southern
West Virginia.
A booklet on
Islam, entitled The Search for Salaam, was
prepared and distributed. Its text is available on this site.
