OUTREACH

The mission ministries of Wesley UMC are a basic expression of what it means to be God's people in the world. Many of our members are familiar with and participate regularly in our local mission projects. In addition, many of our members volunteer their time for many causes outside the scope of Wesley's missions, including teaching English as a Second Language, reading to the blind, Meals on Wheels and others. We are trying to communicate better about our global mission work as well. Below are some of the mission outreach programs of our church.

LOCAL:

  • Metrowest Habitat for Humanity, Wesley UMC has several members who are actively involved in Metrowest Habitat for Humanity, either on the Board of Directors or serving on committees. We have also provided financial support, have participated in "walks" to raise funds and have provided space for meetings.
  • The Bridge House, a halfway house to men re-entering society after spending time in prison, receives our financial support. We have also volunteers in the past to work on household improvements.
  • Pathways Family Shelters, which operates one eight-family and one two-family shelter for homeless families. Wesley UMC has supported PFS through monetary donations as well as buying gifts for families at Christmas, providing Easter baskets for parents and children, and by running an “adopt a student” program where congregation members purchase shoes, clothing and other school supplies for students.
  • Salvation Army, we regularly support the SA financially as well as with people to serve meals on the fifth Sunday of those months with 5 weeks.
  • Turning Point, as part of the commitments of the Health & Welfare/ Social Action Committee, we provide food and serve the meal every third Sunday of the month.
  • A Place to Turn, which operates a local food pantry, benefits from Wesley UMC volunteers who assist in the sorting and distribution of donations of food and clothing.
  • Cooper Community Center, one of Boston's oldest social service agencies, provides activities for neighborhood children in the South End and Roxbury such as infant and toddler care, day care and early childhood development, after school programs and day camp. We regular provide financial support to CCC.

  • GLOBAL:

  • Elizabeth Manzano, Phillipines
  • Theodore Brandt, Zimbabwe
  • Belinda Forbes, Nicaragua
  • Casa Materna, Naples, Italy
  • Heifer Project International, in 2000 and 2001 Wesley UMC held holiday Living Gift Markrts to benefit HPI.
  • Preachers’ Aid Society of New England, Wesley UMC provides financial support to the PAS, which supports retired ministers in many different ways.
  • American Medical Relief Fund, which collects medical supplies deemed obsolete by US technological standards and redistributes them to countries around the world where they are used in hospitals and clinics which might otherwise not have access to such equipment, receives Wesley UMC's financial support.
  • Church World Service, WUMC observes Blanket Sunday annually (on a Sunday near Valentine's Day) in support of Church World Service's purchase and shipment of blankets worldwide and within the US. CWS provides good wool or cotton blend blankets for a modest $5/each. When possible, blankets are purchased closer to the scene of a disaster to speed delivery and to spur local economies.
