Disciple Bible Studies

Disciple Bible Study is an intensive course of study offered regularly at Wesley UMC. Class size is limited to approximately a dozen students. Teachers have been specially trained to teach the Disciple classes. The class lasts about 34 weeks and meets weekly. Bible study at home is assigned. The DISCIPLE Bible Study program has been part of the Wesley's Education Program since 1996. We have had a number of different sessions.

The purpose of DISCIPLE may be summarized in the words of Ephesians 4:12: "To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ." The hoped-for results of the program are Biblically nourished persons committed to live as disciples.

Underlying the development of DISCIPLE is the assumption that people are hungry for the word of God, for fellowship in prayer and study, and for a sense of appropriate ministry as baptized, believing, committed Christians. Therefore, the purpose of DISCIPLE is to develop strong Christian leaders through regular in-depth study of Scripture. Disciple making and Christian nurturing are its goals. Some people will become teachers of DISCIPLE; all persons in the study will be guided into servanthood and ministry. Participants will become better Sunday school teachers, better parents, better youth and adult choir members, better officers in the church, better youth fellowship members because their ministry will be inspired as well as informed

Persons invited to take part in this study should see themselves as being in training for leadership understood as servanthood. Session 33 of the study provides a time when members of the group will talk together about their various roles as disciples. The group members will counsel one another and decide together about the various abilities, gifts, and skills persons have and the ways they might serve, lead, and minister. Some persons completing the course will become teachers for other groups of twelve. When chosen to teach, they will prepare further by taking the three-day training for DISCIPLE. Youth who study DISCIPLE will be better equipped to share their faith with others.

Informal Bible Study is scheduled Sunday mornings at 8:00 AM. Bible passages are selected by the group and study takes place while attendees fold the bulletins in preparation for the morning worship service.
