Wesley House and
Campus Center

Wesley's new facility at the University of California, Berkeley opens in the fall of 2010 and is called “Wesley House and Campus Center.” On the ground floor, the new Campus Center features a welcoming lobby and leasing office, multi-media all-purpose room (which doubles as a day-time wireless study area for students), student art exhibit space, student lounge with small-group country-style kitchen, bicycle room for 30+ bikes, restrooms with showers for visiting college and youth groups, campus ministry offices, front courtyard, and rear deck leading to the historic Wesley-Trinity courtyard.

The upper three floors, the new Wesley House, feature eight five-bedroom intentional living communities for up to 95 student residents, the Kirk Peterson student library, and an open-air deck overlooking the historic Wesley-Trinity historic courtyard and the Berkeley City Club designed by notable Bay Area architect Julia Morgan.

The Project

Wesley Foundation broke ground on July 1, 2009 for construction on a four-story student housing and campus ministry project at its prime location adjacent to the Cal Berkeley campus. The new Wesley House and Campus Center will be completed in the fall of 2010. The cost for basic construction is financed through county tax-exempt bonds purchased by the Affordable Housing Division of Citibank. (For other financial needs see below.)

Student housing rentals will provide a regular revenue stream to support Wesley's organizational mission. Wesley has entered into a new partnership with the university to provide assistance in integrating spirituality into the university's co-curriculum. Thus, the new Wesley House will serve the entire campus as an outreach ministry and as a spiritual theme house for students of any faith.

Kirk Peterson & Associates Architects

Wesley's architect, Kirk Peterson, is known for design-oriented projects. Since founding the firm in 1981, Peterson has been well known for his residential, commercial, ecclesiastical, and historical designs throughout the Bay Area. In 2008 he was a featured architect in the San Francisco Chronicle. He explores and advocates for sustainable design and ways in which an historical design sensibility can be congruent with conservation. Notable Peterson works in Berkeley include the Gaia Bachenheimer buildings. Peterson's design for the Wesley project won unanimous approval at every level in the entitlement process in the City of Berkeley. The Wesley Board of Directors is so proud of Peterson's design that is has named the library in his honor.

Wesley's Project is "Green"

Wesley House and Campus Center is a registered “Build It Green” project. It currently has 165+ tentative points (50 points are required for certification) for design, construction, and energy efficiency. Each of the eight student apartments is separately metered so students can monitor their energy intake and be conscious of their carbon footprint.

Wesley House and Campus Center is a reconciling outreach campus ministry of the United Methodist Church.
