About Us
Welcome !
Woodland Park UMC is now in it's centennial year, 2004. Many members, pastors, and staff have worshiped and served God over the years at Woodland Park UMC. The quality our church has always seemed to have is it's friendly, welcoming nature. Sometime between 1919 and 1924, under the leadership of Reverend Raymond Rees, the flyer / card below was probably used to spread word of our church's presence in the community.
Our Church in 1919
There, there, Little Church,
Don't you cry:
You'll be a big church
Bye and bye
If you just keep friendly,
Folks will know
You're the sort of church
Where they LIKE to go
Not much for looks? True. But come inside.
The foresight of the early members of our church proved to be true. By opening our doors and welcoming all who entered, with a smile, our church community grew. The truth of that cute poem is caught in our former Pastor's, Karen Dammann, statement in our church directory:

"When people visit our church on Sunday mornings, they invariably say the same thing to me as they leave. They always tell me that the people of this congregation are so friendly and warm."

Today, our place of worship has changed, but we are still the same friendly, welcoming congregation whose doors are always open to any who wish to enter.

Urban neighborhoods provide churches with wonderful and challenging opportunities. People who look differently from one another, who live differently from one another, and who speak differently from one another live very closely with one another and share the same parks, libraries, and schools. Urban neighborhoods are rich and dense and filled with promise.

Church ought to be a safe place for people to experience the healing touch of God and the wholeness that emerges from right relationship with othe people, non-human creation, and the Divine. Additionally, church is a place to be transformed and to transform. We live in a prejudiced and broken world. Our prejudices require challenge. Our complacency requires challenge. Our comfort needs to be challenged. All of these things are often built upon the marginalization and oppression of others. Let us challenge one another in love and with support. Let transformation be out goal -- transformation of ourselves and then of our world. I invite the people in the Phinney and Greenwood neighborhoods to enrich our worshipping community...to challenge us and to be challenged by the richness of our community.
