Our History: Woodlawn United Methodist Church

In 1956, Beech Street Methodist Church and Woodlawn merged and built a new church structure at the corner of 15th and Dekum Streets.  Funds from the sale of the old Beech Street Church were used toward the construction costs of the education wing of the church.

Woodlawn Church
During the 1970's and 80's, Woodlawn Church was an active member of the Ecumencial Parish of North and Northeast Portland.  Other participants included at various times Mallory Avenue Christian Church, Patton Central United Methodist, Hughes Memorial UMC, Piedmont Presbyterian, and the Cascade Presbytery of the United Presbyterian Church.

The Ecumenical Parish sponsored an extensive children's program called "People Are Beautiful," created and funded a free community phone, sponsored an interracial families conference, printed a common newsletter, shared a common office, and funded a position of Community Minister.  The Community Minister for much of this time was the Rev. Marge Green.  The Ecumenical Parish disolved in 1991.

In 1990, the Patton-Central congregation merged with Woodlawn.  With funds from the sale of the Patton-Central building, a permanent building endowment fund was established to help fund the ministries of the congregation.  (With the permission of the congregation, the majority of these funds were loaned to Faith United Methodist Church in Troutdale for the construction of their new building.)
