| Central Europe |
UMVIM teams are needed in the Czech and Slovak
Republics to repair church buildings, construct playgrounds, conduct English
Schools, lead camps, and work with children and church members as part of
the GBGM In Mission Together Partnership Program. This entire region has
been the setting for momentous, sometimes tragic historical events in the
past century and is on the verge of new and promising political and social
developments. Today, the Czech and Slovak Republics offer an inspiring,
safe, affordable, engaging, hospitable, and spectacular setting for global
mission in the heart of Europe. UMVIM teams would not only supply tangible material assistance, but also provide crucial spiritual encouragement for emerging congregations and Christian mission at the Horni Pocernice Diakonie - Christian Help Center, Camp Poust, Camp Veselka, and with United Methodist congregations in Bechnye, Protivin, Prague, Jablonne, Blansko, Plzen, Banska Bystrica, Trnava, Slavkovce, Sered, and Jenkovce. Arrangements can be made through the Rev. Steve Darr at Peacework. All UMVIM activities in the region are conducted under the auspices of GBGM Partnership Coordinator, Dick Arnold, and in collaboration with the Czech and Slovak Republics Annual Conference, General Superintendent Josef Cervenak, and Bishop Heinrich Bolleter. Peacework has coordinated UMVIM projects in Russia for the General Board of Global Ministries and has made arrangements for other United Methodist-related church, campus, and youth teams serving in Belarus, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Guatemala, Belize, Vietnam and other countries since 1989. Peacework services include international travel, orientation materials, $2.5 million in global volunteer liability coverage, $250,000 in global health insurance coverage, funds transfers, worldwide 365/24/7 assistance, interpreters, cultural programs, extra travel options in Europe, and all in-country arrangements. The Peacework office in Prague provides support and coordination while the United Methodist conference and local churches serve as hosts. Excellent and affordable travel connections from the United States are available on KLM, Lufthansa, and other reliable carriers. No visas are required for United States citizens. The anticipated total cost would be $1200-1300 per person for 10-14 days. The cost, however, may vary considerably by season, site, and travel schedules. In addition, each team is asked to contribute $3,000 to $4,000 for materials and supplies. Prospective UMVIM groups may contact Steve Darr at Peacework at 800-272-5519 or sdarr@compuserve.com. For more information on the GBGM In Mission Together Partnership Program with UMC congregations, contact Dick Arnold at 540-961-1265 or rmarnold@adelphia.net. |
