All About First Church!

First Church of Winthrop is located in Winthrop Center, directly across from the Police Station. We are a growing community church whose doors are open for all to enjoy in faith and fellowship. We invite you to look around the website to see what First Church is all about. If you have any further questions please contact us by phone, email or by stopping in. God bless!

History of First Church

The history of Winthrop and First Church are closely woven together!

1817 :: At the request of several local families, Reverend Daniel Fillmore from Boston came to Pullen Point to conduct services for the first time. Within a year, the enthusiastic laity called for the establishment of a Methodist Society, which would later become the First Church of Winthrop.

1852 :: Pullen Point officially became the town of Winthrop and the Methodist Church was the only church in the community. To this day the town has continued to acknowledge the importance of the church by including it on the official Town of Winthrop seal.

TODAY :: By the grace of God, First Church has been the foundation of fellowship, hope and praise in our community for nearly 200 years.  The church in which we worship today was rebuilt in 1927. Since then, our congregation has continued to serve the community and openly worship God!

Why "First" Church?

First in...Worship
Sunday worship at First Church is filled with prayer, children’s messages, scripture, and song. The message given is relevant no matter what age you are!

First in...Faith Formation
We have a children’s Sunday School that continues to lead First Church in mission projects and education. We just commissioned a new youth group! The adult bible study meets weekly for reflection and study, with additional studies during Advent, Lent, and summertime. Included in all these classes are thoughtful prayers for family and people in crisis.

First in...Missions
First Church donates regularly to the Winthrop Food Pantry, My Brothers’ Table, Toys for Tots, and supports Nicaraguan Dental Ministry missionaries.rift hop
First Church has a wonderful Thrift shop! Call the church office at 617-846-0708 for  current hours, to come for a unique "shopping" experienceor to donate!

First in...Common Good
The building is a shared community space used daily by Girl Scouts, Kung Fu classes, Alcoholics Anonymous, a children’s drama group, and a Free Methodist Church, to name a few! First Church is the host site for middle school dances, concerts, services, and other community events.

First in...Care-Giving
Our Pastor and members of First Church regularly visit our home-bound members. Cards and flowers are brought to enliven one's spirit and brighten their hospital room. First Church actively cares for those in crisis or seeking

Structure
While First Church of Winthrop is part of the United Methodist Church and is governed by its Discipline, the structure and “business” of First Church is really quite simple:
The  Church Council  meets bi-monthly and is charged with the oversight of our programs. It is a representative body which oversees activities, makes decisions on behalf of the membership and decides how best to use our corporate resources. The Council also serves as leaders for our mission teams, several short-term mission teams,is responsible for the maintenance of our property and attends to our invested funds, creates the annual budget and guides us in raising funds, names leadership for the mission teams.

Additional short-term task forces are named for specific projects as needed, such as worship, outreach, special events, and responses to community needs.
