The Seven Churches of Asia (Part 2)

 

Thyatira:  The Church of the False Prophetess 2:18-29

1)   Christ – eyes like fire and feet, white hot like molten brass, suggests perception and judgment

2)   Condition – love, service, faith, patience, and works

--tolerated false doctrine;  a woman in the church was leading people astray

3)   Command – to those who have not compromised “hold fast till I come”;  “Repent”

4)   Covenant made – a position of authority over the nations – “the morning star”  cf. 22:16

5)   Call to attention – “He that hath an ear…”

 

Sardis:  The Dying Church  3:1-6

1)   Christ – “He that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars.”

2)   Condition – had a name of being spiritual but was really dead

-- hypocrisy and formality

-- a faithful few

3)   Command – “Remember…hold fast…repent”

4)   Covenant made – to those who remain true and faithful

a.     white raiment

b.     a name not blotted out of the Book of Life

c.     a name confessed before the Father

5)   Call for attention – “He that hath an ear…”

 

Philadelphia:  The Loyal Church          3:7-13

1)   Christ – “the holy and true One” (key of David not specifically mentioned in ch. 1; cf  Isaiah 22:21, 22; obviously refers to Jesus as the permanent heir to the throne of David.)

2)   Condition – they have a little strength, they have kept Christ’s word, they haven’t denied  Christ’s name -- they have an “open door,” they will be able to continue despite opposition.

3)   Covenant made – Jesus will make their enemies to submit

-- Jesus will keep them from the  hour or testing, tribulation

4)   Command – Notice no command to repent; “hold that fast which thou hast”

5)   Call to attention  --  “he that hath an ear…”
