REVELATION Chapter 8

The First Four Trumpets of Judgment

I.       THE SEVENTH SEAL OPENED 8:1

          A. A time of silence before the opening. Psalm 46:10

1.       The space of thirty minutes.

2.       The singing, the praises all stop.

B.                It seems to be the calm before the storm.

 

II.      INTRODUCTION OF THE SEVEN ANGELS AND SEVEN TRUMPETS 8:2‑6

A.      The seven Angels verse 2

1.       They stand before God. ‑ A place of prominence

2.       They are the Archangels, one is Gabriel and one is

B.      The angel with the golden censer verse 3.

1.       Who is the Angel?

a.       Appeared in the Old Testament as the Angel of Jehovah. Gen. 16:7; Num. 22:22; Exodus 3:2

b.       Only Jesus could carry out this intercession.

2.       The Censer, verse 5.

a.       Made of gold. Exodus 37:25‑28; Hebrews 9:4

b.       Used to take fire from the altar into the Holy of Holies.

3.       Incense and Prayers verses 3 and 4.

a.       Same function as the Old Testament for the incense.

b.       Prayers recorded now coming to past, THY KINGDOM COME.

c.       The incense and prayer is symbolic of worship and prayer.

C.      The trumpets.

1.       They were blown to announce special occasions.

2.       The Old Testament background of the trumpets.

a.       A signal in time of war. Judges 3:27

b.       To sound an alarm. Jer. 6:1

c.       To announce a new king. I Kings 1:34.

d.                 The beginning of the year of Jubilee, Lev. 25:9.

 

III. THE SOUNDING OF THE FIRST TRUMPET 8:7

A.        Judgment upon the earth.

B.         These things have happened on earth before.

1.       Ex. 9:23, 1/3 part of the trees and all green grass.

2.       Bible tells it will happen again. Acts 2:1‑9.

Jer. 23:7,8 tells of a time when the Lord will bring

His people out of the bondage of the world.

 

IV.     THE SOUNDING OF THE SECOND TRUMPET 8:8‑9

A.      Judgment on the sea.

B.      These happenings are not symbolic.

C.      Old Testament which tells of such times. Hosea 4:1‑3

Zeph. 1:3; Isa. 2:6‑17.

 

V.      THE SOUNDING OF THE THIRD TRUMPET 8:10‑11

A.      Judgment upon the rivers and streams and man himself.

B.      The star.

1.       A heavenly body of some mass falling from Heaven.

2.       It affected the rivers and streams, they turned

bitter.

3.       The name of the star, WORMWOOD, a sagebrush type

plant. The liquid part of this plant can cause

mental illness and eventual death.

4.       Such as used in Ex. 15:23‑25, but in Revelation it

is made bitter instead of sweet.

NOTE: On the cross man offered Christ that bitter

water to drink, while man received the sweetness of

salvation. Now man is to receive that   which is bitter.

 

VI.                        THE SOUNDING OF THE FOURTH TRUMPET 8:12‑13

 

A. A judgment in the heavens. Psalm 19:1

B. 1/3 part of the sun, moon, and stars did not give their

light.  Isa. 12:1‑11; Luke 21:25.

C. Egypt is typical of the light not shining.

NOTE:   The last three trumpets according to verse 13 are to be woe trumpets.
