Chapter 5

The Seven Sealed Book

Introduction:

This chapter is a continuation of the throne room vision of Chapter 4.  Actually, no chapter division should be here.  The subject of this chapter is the book or scrollthat is taken by the Lamb (Christ).  What follows in chapters 6-11 results from this scroll being unsealed and opened.  This book first mentioned in Daniel 12:8-9

 

             I.      THE SUBJECT

A.     The subject of the sealed book is redemption.

B.     The song sung is one of redemption. (5:9)

C.     Redemption is not only in the past, but also future.

(Luke 21:28; Eph. 1:13-14; Romans 8:22-23)

 

          II.      THE SCROLL

A.     Redemption practices in the O.T. …..

1.      from servitude (Lev. 25:47-55)

2.      from widowhood (Deut. 25:5-10; Ruth 4)

3.      from land loss  (Lev. 25:25)

B.     Illustration of Jeremiah buying Hanameel’s land  Jer. 32:6-15

C.     This scroll is referred to as the “title deed of the earth.”

Redeemed from the control of Satan.  Servants have been redeemed, Bride had been redeemed, not land (earth) is claimed.

 

       III.      THE SEARCH (5:2-3)

A.     No one worthy to open (possess, have charge of ) this scroll

B.     No angelic being worthy.

C.     No man ever has been worthy.

* Men have tried to dominate the world but all have failed.

 

        IV.      THE SOBBING SEER  (5:4)

A.     The scroll, unlifted and unopened, brought forth from God’s servant tears of concern and compassion over an inheritance unredeemed.

B.     John wept audibly, not because of any weakness, but because of deep concern.

 

           V.      THE SLAIN LAMB  (5:5-7)

A.     Refers to Christ Gen. 49:8-10; Luke 1: 32-33; Heb. 7:14

B.     Seven denotes fullness, completeness, perfection

C.     Horn denotes authority, imperial power (Deut. 33:17; I Sam. 2:10; Ps. 75:10; 89:17,24; Zech. 1:18-19)

D.     Eyes denote perception, omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence.

 

        VI.      THE SINGERS (5:8-10)

A.     Because of Calvary and the sin debt paid, He had every right to take the book and complete the work of redemption.

B.     He can claim the title deed because He both created the world and redeemed it.

C.     We will be kings and priests.  Matt. 19:28; 2 Timothy 2:12; I Peter 2:5,9

*  In Levitical priesthood, men could only be king or a priest, not both.  Now, we are priests; one day we shall be both.

 

     VII.      THE SEVEN-FOLD DOXOLOGY  (5:11-14)

A.     Power

B.     Riches

C.     Wisdom

D.     Strength

E.      Honor

F.      Glory

G.     Blessing
