The Book of
Revelation
Chapter 2
With possibly the exception of
Revelation chapters 19-22, chapters 2 and 3 are probably the most familiar to
us because they deal with the seven churches of Asia. We want to compare them together with an overall view of their
qualities and weak points, as well as study each church separately.
OUTLINE (cf.
Rev. 1:19)
II.
“THE THINGS
WHICH ARE”
A. The Message to Ephesus 2:1-7
B. The Message to Smyrna 2:8-11
C. The Message to Pergamum 2:12-17
The Message to
each church can be divided into five parts:
1. The reference back to Christ in
chapter 1.
2. The condition or evaluation of the
church
3. The command or exhortation to the
church
a. Good evaluation – exhortation to “hold
fast”
b. Bad evaluation – exhortation
“repent” *
4. The call for attention
5. The special promise (covenant) “to
him that overcometh”
*
Note: The second and sixth churches (Smyrna and Philadelphia) are the only
churches that are not commanded to repent.
Some view these churches as
representing different periods of the church age. However, it is our opinion that we can see the different
characteristics of these churches in all churches throughout the church age.
