What Makes Us Free?

INTRODUCTION:

God has blessed America

  1. Fitting to celebrate His goodness to us.
  2. The bounty we share in this good land.

 

Freedom is one of our greatest blessings.

  1. Political freedom.
  2. Personal freedom.

 

What makes us free?

 

  1. THE SCRIPTURES MAKE US FREE (John 8:32)

A.     “The truth shall make you free”

1.      A well-known quote that few know is from the Bible.

2.      The words of Jesus.

    1. This has always been true politically.
    2. Study a map and see where the Bible has gone bringing freedom.
    3. The amazing timetable of God in the founding of America.

1.      Invention of the printing press: Mid- 1400’s

2.      Birth of Martin Luther: 1483

3.      Discover of New World by Columbus: 1492

    1. The Scriptures in print and the Reformation brought persecution.
    2. America provided a place for people to flee for freedom.

1.      They came for freedom to follow the teachings of the Bible.

2.      They came to found a nation based on biblical principles.

 

  1. THE SAVIOR MAKES US FREE (John 8:36)

A.     “If the Son shall make you free”

B.     Freedom flows from the written Word and the living Word.

C.    From inspiration to authority

D.    Christ sets people free:

1.      Nicodemus set free from religious bondage (John 3)

2.      Zacchaeus set free from his lust for money (Luke 19)

3.      Woman at the well set free from immorality (John 4)

E.     Our political freedom is a gift from God.

F.     Spiritual freedom can be ours through faith in Christ.

 

  1. THE SPIRIT MAKES US FREE  (2 Corinthians 3:17)

A.     “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty.”

B.     Man’s long search for God through religious ceremony.

C.    Christ came to free us from the law and give the Holy Spirit to us.

D.    We must guard against reverting to legalism. (Gal. 6:1)

 

CONCLUSION:

Political freedom makes us free citizens.

Spiritual freedom makes us free saints.
