What Have You Done?

Genesis 3:13

 

INTRODUCTION:

 

The First Question God Ever asked a Woman.

  1. After she had eaten the forbidden fruit.
  2. After she had shared her sin with her husband.

 

Considering God’s searching question to eve.

 

       I.            A QUESTION ABOUT LIFE’S MOST SERIOUS SUBJECT

    1. The subject is sin.
    2. God’s original warning:  death

1.      Came when they were in a perfect environment.

2.      Came when they enjoyed perfect fellowship.

3.      Everything else in the garden was for them.

    1. Today’s testimonies to the truth of God’s warning.

1.      Every siren and every hospital

2.      Every funeral and every cemetery.

3.      Every sign of advancing age.

4.      Every crime and act of violence.

    1. Eve needed to know the seriousness of her act.
    2. God’s question drives His point home.

     II.            IT IS A QUESTION THAT CALLS FOR REPENTANCE

    1. “What is this that thou hast done?”

1.      It is a specific question.

2.      It is a pointed question.

3.      It is a stern question.

4.      It is a question that demands personal investigation.

    1. God’s questions are not to condemn but to convict.
    2. Conviction of sin brings repentance.

1.      Repentance begins with awareness of sin.

2.      Repentance is a change of attitude about sin.

    1. How would you answer God’s question to Eve?

1.      What have you done?

2.      What brings conviction to your heart?

3.      What do you need to confess and forsake?

  III.            IT IS A QUESTION THAT PRECEDES THE PROMISE OF REDEMPTION

    1. Bruising the serpent’s head. (v. 15)

1.      This is the first promise of redemption.

2.      Christ bruised the serpent’s head at the cross.

3.      Redemption made possible for you and me.

    1. Like Eve, we are all sinners (Rom. 3:23)

1.      We have all done things we regret.

2.      We have all broken God’s laws.

3.      Not one of us is righteous.

    1. God offers forgiveness and eternal life to all mankind.
    2. Whatever you have done, God loves you.

 

CONCLUSION:

 

Hear God’s question again:  “What is this thou hast done?”   What have you done?

Respond to God’s gracious mercy and experience forgiveness.
