The Wonders of Christmas

Luke 2:1-14

INTRODUCTION:

Christmas is a season of wonders

1.      The wonder of the birth of Jesus.

2.      The wonder of beautiful music.

3.      The wonder of giving and receiving gifts.

4.      The wonder of children with happy faces.

 

Some lose the wonder.

1.      Has this happened to you?

2.      Has the rush of he season cost you the wonder?

3.      Gypsy Smith: “I have never lost the wonder of it all.”

 

The Wonder of the Characters of Christmas

 

                                    I.        THE WONDER OF THE ANGELS MOVED THEM TO GLORY (v. 14)

A.     Angels played important roles in the birth of Jesus.

1.      The appearance to Zacharias (Luke 1:5-20)

2.      The appearance of Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:26-28)

3.      The appearance to Joseph (Matt. 1:18-25)

4.      The announcement to the shepherds (2:8-14)

B.     A multitude of angels gave glory to God.

1.      “Glory to God” was not a new proclamation for the angels.

2.      But “In the Highest” was an added line.

C.    Higher in Glory God could not go.

1.      The Gospel declares God’s highest glory.

2.      When a soul is saved, angels glory again (Luke 15:10)

 

                                  II.        THE WONDER OF THE SHEPHERDS MOVED THEM TO GO (v. 15, 20)

A.     The good news given to these humble men (vv. 8-12)

B.     Imagine being one of them.

1.      First of all, shepherds were to lowest in the social strata of the day.

2.      You have lived through a routine day.

3.      The sheep are settling down for the night.

4.      You sit and talk about common things.

5.      Suddenly uncommon things happen.

C.    An angel appears; God has your attention.

D.    The wonderful message: Christ is born.

1.      The response: “Let us now go.” (v. 15)

2.      After finding Jesus they went to tell others.

E.     The shared the wonder.

                                III.        THE WONDER OF THE WISE MEN MOVED THEM TO GIVE (Matt. 2:11)

A.     The most mysterious characters of Christmas.

1.      Not sure where they came from or how far they traveled.

2.      Not sure how many there were.

3.      Not sure just when they arrived.

B.     We are sure that they gave gifts to Jesus.

1.      This was why they had left their homes.

2.      They gave their treasures.

C.    George Muller:  ”Giving is not measured by what you give but by what you have left.”

 

CONCLUSION:

What has the wonder of Christ’s birth moved you to do?

Ask God to restore the wonder

Get on the move for Him.
