The Silent Savior

Isaiah 53:7

Series on the Cross for Lent

 

INTRODUCTION:

 

Isaiah keeps developing the details of redemption.

1.      The Man of Sorrows, the despised One (v. 3)

2.      The smitten Redeemer carrying our sorrows (v. 4)

3.      The wounded One who brings us peace (v. 5)

4.      The One who carries the sins of the straying sheep (v. 6)

 

The Character of Christ

1.      His discipline under oppression.

2.      His control during the pressure of the cross.

 

The Silence of Christ proclaimed His strength.

 

I.       CHRIST WAS SILENT WHEN OPPRESSED

A.  He was arrested though innocent (Matt. 26:47-56)

1.   Sold by Judas for thirty pieces of silver.

2.   Betrayed with a kiss.

B.  He was falsely accused but held His peace.

C. He was silent when His followers failed Him

1.   They forsook Him and fled (Matt. 26:56)

2.   Peter denied Him three times (Matt. 26:69-75)

D. Peter’s later description of the silent Savior (I Peter 2:23)

1.   “When he was reviled, reviled not again”

2.   When he suffered, he threatened not”

E.  He was silent before Pilate  (Matt. 27:14)

F.  Compare His silence to ours when we are oppressed.

 

II.   CHRIST WAS SILENT WHEN AFFLICTED

A.  Silent when He was scourged  (Matt 27:26)

B.  Silent when mocked by the soldiers  (Matt. 27:29-35)

1.   The crown of thorns and reed scepter

2.   Bowing before Him saying “Hail King of the Jews”

3.   They spat on Him and struck Him.

4.   Gambling for His garments.

C. Silent when mocked by the crowed.

D. Paul’s description of His silence (Phil. 2:5-7)

1.   “He made himself of no reputation.”

2.   “He humbled himself”

3.   “He became obedient unto death”

E.  What an example for us when we are afflicted!

 

III. CHRIST WAS THE SILENT LAMB

A.    “As a lamb to the slaughter”

B.    Isaiah looks back to the Passover lamb (Exod. 12)

1.     The lamb that brought deliverance from Egypt

2.     The lamb that brought freedom from oppression.

3.     The lamb that rescued them from their afflictions

C.   Isaiah also looks forward to the Lamb of God

1.     The Lamb whose death would deliver those who believe

2.     The Lamb whose death would cleanse us from our sins.

D.   John the Baptist:  “Behold the Lamb of God”  (John 1:29)

 

CONCLUSION:

 

Are you moved by the Silence of the Lamb?

Will you come in Faith to the oppressed and afflicted One?

The Silent Savior invites all to trust Him and be free.
