Why Must Peter Be Told?
I.
PETER NEEDED TO KNOW HE WAS NOT FORSAKEN (14:22-52)
A. Jesus had prepared His disciples for what was ahead.
1. The crucifixion (vv. 22-25)
2. The persecution (v. 27)
3. The Resurrection (v. 28)
B. Peter vowed never to be offended (vv. 29-32)
C. Peter had broken that vow (vv. 5-72)
1. He needed to know that Jesus still loved him.
2. He needed to know that Jesus had kept His vow (v. 28)
D. To fail does not make one a lifelong failure.
1. God’s love reaches out to those who have failed.
2. The cross and the resurrection guarantee that love.
II.
PETER NEEDED TO KNOW HE HAD BEEN FORGIVEN (VV. 53-72)
A. He had followed Jesus from afar
B. He had mingled with the enemies of the Lord
C. He had warmed himself by the wrong fire.
D. He had denied his Lord three times.
1. Didn’t want to be identified with Jesus.
2. Cursed and swore, while denying he knew Jesus
E. Your sins can be forgiven too.
III.
PETER NEEDED TO KNOW HE HAD A FUTURE WITH JESUS (V. 72)
A. He was a broken man.
B. Peter had been broken before
1. When his net was broken (Luke 6:6)
2. When his pride was broken (Luke 6:8)
3. When his partnership was broken (Luke 6:9-10)
C. He had left all to follow Jesus (Luke 6:11)
D. Now he felt disqualified.
E. Peter needed to know he still belonged to the Lord
CONCLUSION:
What the Resurrection Meant to Peter (1 Peter 1:5-8)
1. He called the resurrection his “living hope”
2. He now knew that God had not given up on him.
