THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF WINDSOR, NY
The first Methodist Episcopal Society was organized in Windsor
on December 27, 1830. The Society was able to purchase the land upon which the
church is located for $60, and the first church building was erected in 1833.
The parsonage, located at 25 Academy Street, was purchased in 1897 for the sum
of $1174.
On the evening of January 1, 1968, the church building burned, leaving only the
shell of the building behind. Although the fire consumed nearly everything, some
things were saved, including the altar bible, the communion table and communion
set, the gold cross an the candlesticks. The bell was still hanging in the
damaged belfry, and was also saved
In tribute to the vision and perseverance of its members, a drive was begun
almost immediately to build a new church. In October, 1969, the first services
were held in the current sanctuary. The education wing was added in 1975 after a
generous bequest from
Albert and Bessie Vroman was received.
The same spirit of enthusiasm, commitment and dedication lives on in the current
members of the congregation!
Thanks to Stuart Nye for his notes on the history of the church.
