All you ever wanted to know about the Christian Year

Did you ever have a question about what in the world the preacher was talking about when s/he mentioned the "Christian Year?"

The "Christian Year" starts with the first Sunday of Advent and ends the last day before the first Sunday of Advent for the next year. The important dates in the Christian year revolve around either Christmas or Easter. Although Christmas always falls on December 25 (at least in the Western church), Easter is variable.

By clicking here you can find the actual dates for the major observances during the Christian Year as well as some short descriptions describing and defining those observances. Take a look. All you have to do is to click here . Top .

Church and State in the United States - Update
by Thomas Wm. Madron

February 28, 2003. On June 26, 2002, a California Federal court ruling, which states that the phrase "under God" makes the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional , sparked a new debate throughout the United States regarding the separation of church and state. .

A federal appeals court Friday, February 28, 2003, rejected the Bush administration's request to reconsider its decision that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional because of the phrase "under God." According to CNN, "The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said it would not accept any other petitions to reconsider last June's ruling by a three-judge panel that the pledge is unconstitutional when recited in public classrooms. " The ruling means the case may go to the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately a considerable amount of misinformation is disseminated about nature of the separation of church and state. The issue is not about whether the founding fathers believed in God, nor is the issue about whether they thought a belief in God was a good thing (or whether we do, for that matter). The issue is whether payments of tax money for the support of sectarian schools and requirements to assent to a belief in God constitute a violation of the Constitution's requirements for separation between church and state.

Sweet Singer Unqualified Success!
March 22, 2003. For the 109 people attending the Windsor UMC production of Sweet Singer, starring Steven Kimbrough, on Saturday, March 22, 2003, the evening was an unqualified success.

Steven Kimbrough as Charles Wesley

As one person put it, "that's the way history should be taught," referring to the fact that Sweet Singer, a "one-man" play, made the life and music of hymn writer Charles Wesley come alive. Too often we think of history as being something that is dead and gone, but the poetry of Charles Welsey continues to live in the hymn books of most Christian denominations.

The Peace of God

Read Psalm 27

Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives."
-John 14:27 (NRSV)

EVERYBODY imagines peace differently. Some people think that peace is a matter of external conditions. They feel most at peace when life is calm and they feel safe. They say they are at peace when they have no big problems and the people they love are well. But peace based on external conditions can be destroyed by events or situations. When safety vanishes, fear can overwhelm us. We may recover a sense of calm by walking in the park, feeling a part of God's creation, perfect and beautiful.

Inner peace is another kind of peace. We may feel inward peace, a deeper satisfaction, when we sit with our family, drink coffee, and chat. Being together without quarreling depends on and builds a feeling of inner peace.

One other kind of peace can be ours, especially in hard situations when we need help. This is the peace of God. We often forget that God is our most important friend and helper. We try to do everything by ourselves. But then comes a moment when we have to say, "Enough! I can't do it. I surrender!" This is wise; the Bible tells us, "The battle is the Lord's" (1 Sam. 17:47). So we trust God, who will give us peace that cannot be taken away.

Wiktoria Puchalska (Warsaw, Poland)

Prayer
God, help us to find your peace in everyday life and to share your peace with everyone we meet. Amen.

Thought for the day
For those who look with an open heart, God is everywhere.

Those who feel no need for God

The two black and white photographs below were recently unearthed by members of the Windsor UMC congregation. We do not know much about either one, but thought some folks might find them interesting.

The oldest of the two photos is one of the women of Windsor UMC taken in 1941. Unfortunately that is all the information we have.

Windsor Women, 1941; Click me for a larger picture.

We have a little more information on the second photo, from 1944. It was "The Bible Class."

From left to right, the people are: Mrs. Golden, Mrs. Julia Tindall, Mr. Voelbel, Mrs. Emma Spear, Mrs. Addison Pullen.

Persons of all ages are invited to come by and used the computers we make available. The Internet Cafe computers are also be available during the Windsor Country Breakfasts every third Saturday. As demand develops we will expand the times when the Internet Cafe is open.

Surfing the Internet

If you have ever wanted to learn how to email your friends, your children, or your grandchildren, or to learn how to surf the web, then now is the time! The Internet Cafe is a free service of Windsor UMC to the Village of Windsor and the surrounding area that will help you find out how to do these things and provide you a place to do it. We invite you to visit us and use our computers to learn and communicate.

Wishing for email

We have set up several computers, all of which are connected to the Internet. What is the Internet? It is a global network of networks ultimately connecting millions of computers. One of the services on the Internet is electronic mail (email) through which you can correspond with a lot of people, some of whom are probably your friends and family. Another service is the World Wide Web (or “WWW,” or just “the Web”) that allows you to find all sorts of information.

Both email and web surfing are easy to learn.

You can use our computers so you do not need one of your own. If you already know how to use email or how to surf the web, then you can just come by and use our computers. If you need some help, we’ll have people to help you. This is your chance to find out what the Internet is all about.

The Internet Cafe

We believe a church should be a kind of community center. We want you to feel comfortable with us even if you do not worship with us. We want to provide an opportunity for you to learn and relax with your friends and neighbors. We’re particularly concerned about those who are not connected to the Internet and may not know how to use it, but even if you know the Internet well, you can come and help others learn. Top .

About Quick Polls

"Quick Polls" are a way of testing the opinions of people on specific issues. Because the people who respond are "self-selecting," quick polls are not scientific. You will find the current quick poll on the right side of this page, along with other useful links to information not covered in news articles.

When quick polls are used by an organization like Windsor United Methodist Church, they merely provide some interesting information regarding the opinions primarily of interest to people of faith. To express your opinion ("vote") on a quick poll all you need to do is to click on the small button the best reflects your opinion, then click on the "Vote" button. The current results are immediately available by clicking on the "Results" button.

Please express your opinion on the current "Quick Poll." Your response is completely confidential in that no record of how you personally "vote" is retained.
