I was born to Christian
parents in Seoul, Korea. Growing up, I was exposed to Christianity
early on through their love and care. I am most grateful for having
devout Christians as my parents and owe them, especially my mother,
what I am today. After the tragedy of my father’s untimely death at
the hands of North Korean Communists during the Korean conflict, the
subsequent hardship increased our family’s faith in God and helped
us develop empathy for those who suffer from adversities in life.
I am also grateful for
meeting my wife, Frances, a loving and understanding companion for
the journey of faith. Between us, we have two children, Grace and
David, with whom we enjoyed the blessed life of a Christian family.
The children are on their own now, and we have three wonderful
grandchildren, but we remain close in sharing the grace of Christ and
faith in Him.
As a junior in high
school, I accepted Christ as my personal Savior while attending a
revival meeting led by an evangelist, Robert Pearce. Since then, I
have come to grasp the meaning of the cross. The love of Christ
touched my heart.
Urged by my parents, I
received sound training and education despite the many challenges I
faced putting myself through college while helping to support the
family at the same time. My career began in the United States as a
professional with a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering. I viewed
my profession as an opportunity to share with people around me in
Christian grace and love by serving the community with what I have to
offer. Enjoying my profession, I progressed to become an executive
in technical management and made substantial contributions to the
industry, for which I am grateful. Through successes and failures in
life, I have kept learning humility, experiencing the love of God and
building confidence in God through faith in Christ.
I have experienced the
transforming power of the Holy Spirit and become part of the church,
participating in God’s grand plan to bring about His reign here on
earth. It is my desire to heed God’s command to tell the story of
Jesus Christ to all around me through how I live and share.
As a layperson, my
responsibility increased as I took on leadership roles in the local
churches, involving myself in a ministry of nurturing, outreaching
and witnessing. Several years ago, I decided to take steps for
ordained ministry as an elder in the New England Conference after
many years of searching for ways to better serve the Lord – giving
discerning thoughts on God’s grace, gifts and fruits in me. Going
through the candidacy process, including training at Boston
University School of Theology for a Master of Divinity program, my
sense of calling as a Christian, especially as a servant leader in
pastoral ministry, has gotten firmer.
After serving Baltic
United Methodist Church in Baltic, Connecticut for almost two years,
I have now been appointed to the community of the First United
Methodist Church in Mansfield Center, Connecticut. Frances and I are
very excited to pray and work together with each member of the
congregation, believing that God’s new grace will be poured out on
us all as we engage in building the reign of God together.
At the end of my life on
earth, I would like to be able to say together with all the people of
God, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I
have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, righteous judge, will give to me on
that Day, and not to me only, but also to all who have loved His
appearing.”(2 Timothy 4:6-8)
