HISTORY OF THE GEORGE WHITEFIELD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The George Whitefield UMC officially came into being at a charge conference on October 20, 1996.  The new church was a merger of the former West Warren and Whitefield United Methodist Churches.  A special worship service in West Warren on September 29th celebrated 120 years of ministry in that community.  The first worship service of the newly merged congregation took place on World Communion Sunday, October 6th.  The Rev. Jerome K. DelPino, District Superintendent, celebrated Holy Communion on 10/6 and presided over the charge conference at which the merger was made official.  The merger process was guided by the Rev. Thomas McKeown, interim pastor.  Effective December 1, 1996, the Rev. Mary Jane O’Connor was appointed as the first full-time pastor of the George Whitefield UMC by Bishop Susan W. Hassinger.
