We have dinner and lots of great fellowship together at our meetings. The Degar (referred to by French colonists as Montagnard) are the indigenous peoples of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The term Montagnard means "mountain people" in French and is a carryover from the French colonial period in Vietnam. In Vietnamese, they are known by the term thượng (highlanders) - this term can also be applied to other minority ethnic groups in Vietnam). Thượng is the Vietnamese adaptation of the Chinese "Shang" (上). Montagnard was the term, typically shortened to "Yard", used by U.S. military personnel in the Central Highlands during the Vietnam War. Outside of Vietnam, Greensboro, NC is the largest population of the Degar. Westover hosts weekly Sunday afternoon worship services, and has supported three families to bring their family members to the U.S. and locate housing, schooling, and jobs. Westover hosts Saturday schools for Russians, recently moved to Raleigh. The teachers instruct in English. J.T. Locke Mentoring Program (City of Raleigh) During the summer months, Westover is hosting the J.T. Locke Mentoring Program, sponsored by the City of Raleigh, for at-risk children and youth.
