Russia Initiative Consultation to Highlight Ministry with Youth
New York, January 6, 2008--Ministry with youth and young adults in Russia and adjoining areas will be in the spotlight at a mission event marking the 120th anniversary of the first Methodist church in that country.
A delegation of students and other youth and young adults will take part in the 2009 consultation of the United Methodist Russia Initiative, set for March 5-7 in San Diego, California. The gathering will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of Methodism as a denomination in Russia.

The Russia Initiative, established 17 years ago, encourages commitment to mission among people in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia. It involves a network of partnerships between congregations there and in the United States.

"Led by the Spirit into the World" is the overall theme of the March consultation, which will be attended by clergy and lay leaders from the international network. Persons interested in getting involved in or learning about the Russia Initiative are also invited.

Speakers will include Bishop Hans Växby, leader of the Eurasia Area, a geographical region covering a vast area of Eastern Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia, and the Rev. Edward W. Paup, general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries.

The California-Pacific Annual Conference is hosting the consultation. A group of Russia Initiative partner churches along the West Coast are helping to organize the event. "We are excited about meeting on the West Coast for the first time, hosted by a strong community of churches with partnerships in Siberia," said James Athearn, coordinator of the Initiative.

Methodism existed in both western Russia, notably in the St. Petersburg Area, and the far eastern section of Siberia prior to the Russian revolution that brought the communists to power in 1917. A revival began shortly after the fall of communism in 1989. The Russia Initiative was an outgrowth in part of humanitarian relief begun in the days of economic instability following the break-up of the Soviet Union.

The San Diego consultation will take place at the Marriott San Diego Mission Valley Hotel at 8757 Rio San Diego Drive, San Diego, CA 92108 (telephone: 800-228-9290). The room rate is $129.00 per night from March 4 to 8, provided the reservation is made prior to February 11. A link for online hotel registration is available at the consultation website at http://new.gbgm-umc.org/work/initiatives/russia/consultation.

Meals and refreshment breaks will be provided in a package at $150.00 per person, including dinner on Thursday night, three meals on Friday, and breakfast on Saturday. In addition, the $25.00 registration fee is waived for persons coming from Eurasia. The fee increases by $10 for those who register after February 5. A registration form to be returned by mail is available online at the web link above.

Partner churches in the US are encouraged to sponsor Eurasia delegates by helping to cover the costs of travel, visa, insurance, hotel, and meals.

Additional information is available online or by contacting Jim Athearn at jimathearn@gmail.com or by telephone at 540-662-2066.
