First Time Visitor - FAQ

MRS. Sandy Smith, Wesley Memorial church member
Mrs. Sandy Smith

“Church Shoppers” are most welcome! It makes sense to find a congregation in which you “feel comfortable.” The members of Wesley Memorial hope that you will find such a feeling here, make this your church home, and live out your faith in this caring community. Please pray for guidance in looking for your church home.

Questions:
Most Important - We want your experience with Wesley Memorial to be an enjoyable, inviting and lasting one. We are here for you. We want to provide a church family that allows you to become closer to God and helps you live a Christ-filled life.

People First - The most common thing Pastor Sipes hears from person who are  just beginning to come to church is they want to get to know our preacher and others in the church family. Our pastor and church members will go out of there way to meet and greet you. This is an advantage of a small congregation. There is no insignificant member of God's Church Family. Please give us an opportunity to love and care for you.

How can persons become Members? By Confession of Faith—this process marks the initial entrance into membership in the Church, when one confesses faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  By Reaffirmation of Faith—renewing our confession of faith after a period of inactivity or not being on a church membership role.  Transfer of Membership—you may be joining from another United Methodist Church or a Christian church of another denomination.  We recognize baptism from all other Christian churches.

Where is the Nursery? - It is on the first floor of the Education Building (follow breeze-way at front of church). As you enter the door you will be facing an elevator. The nursery is the second door on the right. The nursery opens at 9:45 a.m. If you are coming to the 11 a.m. service just ask a greeter or usher for assistance.

Where are the restrooms? On the first floor of the educational building. As you enter the door on the Heyward Street side they are on the right looking toward the elevator. Signs are placed to assist you.

Where can I park? Park along Heyward Street or Queen Street. Both sides can be used and you should find ample space. Handicap spaces are directly in front of the sanctuary  on the Heyward Street side and on the west side on Queen Street.

Will greeters or others be on hand to help me? Greeters will greet you when you enter, provide you with a worship program that tells everything that is happening in the service.

I don't know anyone! We want to get know you! We believe church is a place  of fellowship and friendship. Don't worry if this is your first time, we won't ask you to stand up and be recognized. Our folks will be talking before the service and after the morning service. Almost a guarantee - someone will speak to you. We want you to know us and vice versa.  Please sign a visitors' sheet that is placed in bulletin.

What Should I wear? We know you might be worried about wearing the right thing when you come to church; we invite you to come as you are.  Whether you are more comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt, polo and khakis, or a suit and tie, you'll fit right in at Wesley Memorial. No matter what your personal style, you’ll be comfortable at Wesley Memorial Church. If you prefer dressy, business, or casual attire, chances are there will be others dressed much like you no matter when you visit. The most common form of dress could be best described as “casual.”
If you plan to attend the Contemporary Service, dress is very casual.

Can I meet the Pastor? The Pastor would love to meet you!  Pastor Sipes will be in the foyer after worship every Sunday morning to personally greet our guests and they ask that you take a moment to stop and say hello. If you would like a more in-depth visit with the Pastor, please call the church office 803-771-4540 to set up a time for a personal visit or phone call. Email Pastor Sipes.

Will I be expected to give money? No, many people give on one Sunday per month so if one gives or doesn't give  no one knows the difference.

How long will the service last? Our worship service will last approximately one hour. We are respectful of your time. The sermon will last 25 to 30 minutes. The service at Wesley Memorial is usually finished close to the  noon hour. On Communion Sunday's (first Sunday in the month) the service can be 10 min. longer.

2 Corinthians 6

New International Version (NIV)

6 As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. James 1:2-4
