United Methodist Women (UMW)

The United Methodist Women (UMR) provides opportunities of study and service for women
in Wesley McCabe. The local unit meets the second Tuesday of each month; they meet either
at the church or in a home of one of the members. During the year there are a variety of
programs and activities to meet the needs of the members, the church, local community and
the world wide mission program.

Stated Purpose

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Activiies include:

A monthly Bible study for 8 months of the year, with July being a "vacation" month.

> March -- is the Annual Mission Conference at Wesley McCabe. This
year the church celebrated its 25th Conference. The UMW ladies always take an active part
in this event, including the hosting of the Saturday luncheon.

> April -- an Annual Spring Brunch is held for the the ladies of Wesley McCabe with a book
review by Mrs. T. G. Fields. This is a popular even which is always well attended.

> April is also Rusk Hospital Birthday month where the ladies travel to Rusk State Hospital
to serve cakes, punch, bananas and birthday gifts. This is always well received by the patients
and all of Wesley McCabe people are very generous to contribute cakes and money to make
this event successful.

> The Jolly Elders, organized in 1973 for senior adults, meets every fourth Tuesday and
is the largest UMW project that has continued with success over these years. The senior
adults enjoy lunce, an interesting program and often games. The Jolly Elders not only
serve members of Wesley McCabe, but also members of many other Longview churches;
it is an ecumennical affair.

> The UMW financially support the Wesley McCabe Teriffic Tuesday Children's Program,
the Asbury House Child Enrichment Center in Longview, the Kentucky Mountain Mission,
the McCurdy School in New Mexico, and the Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Ky. They
give support to Pat and Kathleen Mays, Wesley McCabe missionaires in Prague, Czech
Republic, and Tom & Donna Wolford in Africa. Support also goes to those from Wesley
McCabe to attend seminary. At present they give their prayers and support to Brian Brooks,
a young minister in St. Paul's seminary in Kansas City.

> Each year the UMW has supported a local community facility such as Newgate Mission,
Highway 80 Rescue Mission, Buckner Family Ministries and the Homes for Abused Women.

UMW women also give many hours of volunteer service to the local church and through
out the community where they can best show people the love of Jesus Christ.
