Jesus is Crucified |
| At noon the sky turned dark and stayed that way until three o'clock.
Then about that time Jesus shouted, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you deserted me?"
Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said, "He's calling for Elijah." One of them at once ran and grabbed a sponge.
He soaked it in wine, then put it on a stick and held it up to Jesus. Others said, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah will come and save him."
Once again Jesus shouted, and then he died. At once the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
The earth shook, and rocks split apart. Graves opened, and many of God's people were raised to life. Then after Jesus had risen to life,
they came out of their graves and went into the holy city, where they were seen by many people. The officer and the soldiers guarding
Jesus felt the earthquake and saw everything else that happened. They were frightened and said, "This man really was God's Son!"

O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown; How pale Thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish, which once was bright as morn! What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered, was all for sinners’ gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! ’Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favor, vouchsafe to me Thy grace. What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest friend, For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee. "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" Text Attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux, 1153 The United Methodist Hymnal Hymn 286 |
