The Webberville United Methodist Church is pleased to have been selected the Lansing District Church of the Year for 1997. For some time it has been the dream of Webberville UMC to initiate community outreach programs. Because of the nature of the community and its problems, we believe it is imperative to provide programs for elementary aged children and junior high/high school aged youth.

Webberville is a small, rural community with a large proportion of single parent, low income families residing mainly in the community's two mobile home parks and low income housing complex. A high proportion of elementary aged children are classified by school officials as "at risk" students. The 1996 survey of illicit drug use among elementary and high school students was recently released showing that drug use among Webberville students is above the national average for almost all categories of drugs.

The purpose of WUMC's Rural Youth Outreach program is to provide supervised activities and positive relationships with adult role models in a safe and non-threating environment. Through doing this we hope to foster positive associations with the Church which may lead to commitments to Christ.

Evening drop-in program for youth

Kids *peer counseling
*non-threatening environment
*positive alternative social activities
*positive relationships with adult role models

Church of the year funds will be used for:
kids *part-time professional staff
*computer equipment
*volunteer recruiting and training
*program resources
*publicity materials and postage
