Defining Love


charity (noun), pl. charities.
1. Provision of help or relief to the poor; almsgiving.
2. Something given to help the needy; alms.
3. An institution, an organization, or a fund established to help the needy.
4. Benevolence or generosity toward others or toward humanity.
5. Indulgence or forbearance in judging others.
6. Often Charity. Theology. The virtue defined as love directed first toward God but also toward oneself and one's neighbors as objects of God's love.


compassion (noun)
Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it.


forbear  (verb), forbore, forborne, forbearing, forbears.
—tr.
1. To refrain from; resist.
2. To desist from; cease.
3. Obsolete. To avoid or shun.
—intr.
1. To hold back; refrain.
2. To be tolerant or patient in the face of provocation.
—forbearer (noun)


solicitude (noun)
1. The state of being solicitous; care or concern, as for the well-being of another.
2. Often solicitudes. A cause of anxiety or concern.


indulgence (noun)
1.a. The act or an instance of indulging; gratification. b. The state of being indulgent.
2.a. The act of indulging in something. b. Something indulged in.
3. Liberal or lenient treatment; tolerance.
4. Self-indulgence.
5.a. Something granted as a favor or privilege. b. Permission to extend the time of payment or performance. c. Patient attention.
6. Roman Catholic Church. The remission of temporal punishment still due for a sin that has been sacramentally absolved.


benevolence (noun)
1. An inclination to perform kind, charitable acts.
2.a. A kindly act.    b. A gift given out of generosity.
3. A compulsory tax or payment exacted by some English sovereigns without the consent of Parliament.
