The United Methodist Women (UMW) was established at Washington Street United Methodist Church in 1879 as the Woman's Missionary Society. Though this organization has gone through several name changes, its mission has always remained the same. The purpose is threefold: (1) To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; (2) To develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and (3) To expand the concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

There are eight UMW circles which meet monthly, September through May. Three meet in the morning, two in the afternoon and three at night. Some circles have members of the same generation, while others are intergenerational. All offer an opportunity to study, to grow spiritually, to participate in ministries and to become better acquainted with each other. All ladies are invited to join the UMW.

The UMW has four general meetings a year, January, April, September and November. These meetings bring all circles together for special programs and fellowship.
