Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost in Kingdomtide
Liturgical Color: Green

November 8, 2009
Eleven O'clock

The theme of our worship this Sunday is inner peace. Our psalm speaks of “the bread of anxious toil,” and that seems to be a good description of the kind of anxiety into which we fall too often. The counter to that is “the peace that passes understanding.” May our worship help to calm our fears and bring us inner peace.

God, whose love is reigning o’er us, let your Holy Spirit settle among us in this hour. Guide our hearts and minds to receive the Word you have for us.   The Anthem

"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"

arr. Hayes

A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood. Of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great, And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not His equal. A mighty fortress is our God! So mighty, He’s my rock, He’s my fortress, He is my deliverer, My Savior! Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle. A mighty fortress is our God, Our refuge, Our tower, our fortress, our rock, Our deliv’er, Our provider, our Savior, our God! That word above all earthly pow’rs, No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, The mortal life also, The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. A mighty fortress is our God, A mighty fortress is the Lord our God!
