Lay Speaking Ministries
Lay Speaking School Set for September 29-30
Praise the Lord. It is time for our Fall Lay Speaking Ministries School. I have been looking forward to our coming together again for a time of Spiritual Growth and loving fellowship. Our Fall School is scheduled for September 29-30, 2007 at Bethel UMC in Walterboro (Hampton Street).
This school will offer the following Lay Speaking Courses:
(1) Basic — this is the class for beginning lay speakers.
(2) Following advanced courses
The Book of Discipline now requires that all Local Church Lay Speakers continue their education every three years.
The South Carolina Conference has initiated this requirement for 2007. All Local Church Lay Speakers who do not take an advanced course must now take the Local Church Lay Speaker Refresher Course Concepts in Leadership I. This class will be taught on Saturday, September 29 at Bethel UMC Walterboro.
It will begin at 10:00 am and last until 5:00 pm. (Snacks and lunch will be provided).
Please note the hours for this refresher class are different from the normal lay speaking two day classes.
The Walterboro District Lay Speaking Ministries Committee and the instructors have worked diligently to enhance the quality and benefit of our schools. Registration packets have been mailed to all lay speakers and we are looking forward to seeing you.

Lay Speakers’ Reports Due at Charge Conference
The required annual report for all lay speakers must be completed and submitted to the lay speaker’s charge conference this fall. Charge Conferences begin in August. An annual report requesting re-certification or a change in status is required by the Book of Discipline. Reports must be completed by the lay speaker, signed by the pastor, and approved by a vote of the charge conference. Certified Lay Speakers must also report on their lay speaking activities for the past year. Failure to submit an annual report and be approved by his/her charge conference will cause a lay speaker to be discontinued.
