Dear Walterboro District Pastors, Lay Instructors & Lay Speakers:

 

The 2008 Winter Lay Speaking School for the Walterboro District will be held on
February 16-17, 2008 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro.  Classes will start on Saturday at 8:00 A.M. and end at 5:00 P.M. Sunday classes

will start at 2:00 P.M. and end at 6:00 P.M. The courses being offered are listed on the enclosed registration form.

 

New applicants are required to take the Basic Course first to become a Local Church Lay Speaker.    Persons who have taken the Basic Course and wish to become a Certified Lay speaker must take the United Methodist Heritage course as their first advanced course. Those who have had the Basic and Heritage courses may select one of the other courses offered.

 

Persons interested in becoming a Pulpit Supply must take Lay Speakers Interpret to Others Our United Methodist Heritage, Lay Speakers Lead in Worship,

and From Lay Speakers Preach.

 

The registration deadline for the Winter Lay Speaking School is February 1, 2008.  Registration must be postmarked by February 1, 2008.  Class size is

limited, so those wishing to attend should not delay. To receive a refund, we must be notified by each respective deadline. Registration cannot be

carried forward.  There is a late fee of $5.00 if registration is postmarked after Feb. 1, 2008.

 

Individuals who are currently Certified Lay Speakers should verify their status by checking the date on their last training certificate. If they have not

maintained their status by completing an advanced course in the last three years, they must take an advanced course and submit an annual report to the

Applicants should complete a registration form and send it with a $45.00 check or money order made payable to The UMC Conference Treasurer to

Refresher Course: (Local Church Lay Speakers)

 

            Local Church Lay Speaker Refresher (Cost $25)

Local church lay speakers will be able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the importance of prayer in the life of a spiritual leader. (2) Formulate a prayer appropriate for a group and lead prayer in a group. (3)Understand and be aware of small group dynamics, including use of conflict transformation principles. (4)Learn about the Wesleyan understanding of Christian conferencing and prepare a meeting agenda to ensure time for Christian conferencing.

 

Prerequisite Course

 

            Youth Basic Course
The Basic course designed with middle and high school age young people in mind.

 

            Lay Speaking Basic Course
The Basic Course includes a study of what it means to be God's called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. The guide for this course is practical, including checklists, outlines, and step-by-step plans. Exercises draw on the individuals' personal experiences and on what they know about their communities. The course provides learning opportunities in three areas of service for lay speakers: leading, caring, and communicating.

 

Advanced Course Offerings: (Lay Speaking Basic is the prerequisite course for all advanced courses)

 

            Lay Speakers Interpret to Others Our United Methodist Heritage
This course will assist the Lay Speaker to gain an understanding of the distinctive traditions and emphases of The United Methodist Church. The lay speaker will become informed about the journey of the people historically known as Methodists and Evangel Brethren, who united in 1968 to form The United Methodist Church. The contributions of the early leaders, Wesley, Otterbein, Boehm, Albright, and others, will be reviewed. The lay speaker will develop skills to interpret this heritage to others.

 

            Lay Speakers Tell Stories

Lay speakers learn what makes a good story and discover their own style as a storyteller. Learn techniques of effective storytelling and practice creating stories from their own experiences.

            Lay Speakers Lead in Worship

The purposes of this course are: (1) To gain an understanding of corporate worship as an encounter of

the gathered community with God and with one another. (2) To learn how to plan worship that is both

authentically Christian and relevant to Christians and seekers today. (3) To develop the practical skills

needed for leading worship.

 

            Lay Speakers’ Introduction to The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church

This course examines the Biblical basis of the foundation of the United Methodist Church’s book of law.  The course provides opportunities to examine our social principles and the practical application of church law with governs our local churches. 

 

 

            Lay Speakers Create Disciple Making Faith Communities

The goal of this course is to provide church leaders with key tools and principles that can be used to

make disciple-making faith communities.  Lay speakers will learn about discipleship systems, the term

faith community and how the theory of displacement affects their congregation, as well as considering

the realities of call and leadership, 21st century structures for ministry, and new opportunities for

ministry. 

 

            Lay Speakers Discover Spiritual Gifts

This course focuses on acquiring a better understanding of the church and its ministry needs, learning what it means to be a minister; doing the work of Christ in the church and in the world; and being more fully equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts.

 

            From Your Heart to Theirs:  Delivering the Effective Sermon (NEW PREACH)

This course provides useful information to the lay speaker about the art of writing sermons. The lay speaker will receive information about resources available to research topics, interpret scripture, and writing interesting and inspiring sermons.

 

Public Communication Statement:

By signing this document you give permission to the Walterboro Lay Speaking Ministries to use any statements, oral or written, auditory productions, photographs and video productions for any public communication and promotion of the Walterboro Lay Speaking Ministries of the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church.
