CHURCH HISTORY
Wall United Methodist Church began in 1834 when a small group led by Jeremiah Newman met for prayer and worship. Rev. William Franklin was the first appointed minister. Jacob Smith donated the land on Old Mill Road and with his brother Joseph, made plans for the church. A structure was erected in 1854, and in 1911, was moved 50 feet and remodeled. The fellowship hall building, which contained a dining room, kitchen, lower hall, and Sunday School rooms, was built nearby in 1955 to accommodate a growing congregation. In 1962, a new larger sanctuary was connected to the fellowship hall building. Sadly, on New Year's Eve 1962, fire gutted the original church building. The church bell withstood the fire and now stands on the church's original site, surrounded by the cemetery.
In 1982, a daycare center was opened, using the Church school rooms on weekdays, and a playground was added later to the field behind the church.
The Parsonage, which originally stood next to the little old church on Old Mill Rood, was moved in 1961 to Holly Place, Spring Lake Heights, NJ 07762.
The church is located on the corner of Old Mill Road and Wall Road, one block East of Rte. 35, opposite the Circus Drive-In Restaurant.
WHAT IS EPIPHANY?
Are you acquainted with the word "epiphany"? It is derived from the Greek word, epiphaneia, and means "anappearance." Centuries ago, the church set aside January 6th, the 12th day after Christmas, and called that day Epiphany, intending for it to refer to the revealing of Jesus as the Christ to the Wise Men who were Gentiles. The very first followers of Christ were Jewish. The story of the revelation of Christ were Jewish. The story of the revelation of Christ to the Wise Men, who were non-Jewish, is a reminder that God meant for Christ to be the Savior of the whole world. As an old hymn puts it: "The light of the world is Jesus." The whole world! Hope you had a Merry Epiphany!---Charles Ferrell
