CHURCH HISTORY
Wallace Memorial has recently celebrated its centennial.  The church was founded in 1896 when a group from Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church decided to form a separate congregation.  Early on in its history, Wallace Memorial identified itself with the Methodist Protestant Church, a family within the Wesleyan movement that placed strong emphasis on a strong laity and an episcopacy with very limited power.  Wallace Memorial became Methodist in 1939 when The Methodist Protestant Church, Methodist Episcopal Church South, and the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) merged.  When the Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist churches merged in 1968, Wallace Memorial then became United Methodist.  The strong emphasis on local lay leadership, and local autonomy - the legacy from Wallace Memorial's early association with the Methodist Protestant movement - continues to flavor the spirit of this congregation which also prides itself on its warm, friendly, "family" atmosphere.  Wallace Memorial UMC also enjoys a close working relationship with Fox Hill Central: the two churches combine efforts in order to offer United Methodist Youth Fellowship and Vacation Bible School programs, to sponsor the Easter Dawn services at Grandview Beach, and to carry out some local mission program.s
