Activities

The Wakarusa United Methodist Church has many activities throughout the year.

In September we welcome everyone back to a new curriculum in our Sunday School classes with a Fall Festival.  The Festival is held immediately following the 10:00 Worship Service.

At the Festival you can enjoy a light lunch.  Following lunch you might want to try your hand at one of the many games.  There is a game for each age group from toddler to adult.  Small prizes are given to winners.  If you aren't a game player, you can just enjoy fellowship with others.

The United Methodist Women sponsor a Potato Bake in October.  What a great way to get out of cooking dinner!  There are toppings for every taste available to "dress" your potato from butter to seasoned ground beef, broccoli, cheese and many more.

Also in October, we gather gently used household goods and clothing for Red Bird Mission.  The Men's Group delivers the collected items to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.  The items are sold in the Mission's store.

Of course November brings thoughts of Thanksgiving.  On the Sunday proceeding Thanksgiving everyone is invited to share in a Harvest Dinner.  Meat, Potatoes, Rolls and Beverages are supplied by the Fellowship Committee.  Bring your own table service and a dish to share.  There is always quite a feast for those who come to this Thanksgiving celebration.

Soon after Thanksgiving, the week before Advent begins, the Worship Committee may ask for help with "Hanging of the Greens".  The first Saturday in December the United Methodist women sponsor the annual Cookie Walk/Bazaar.  Hundreds of dozens of cookies are available so you can choose your favorite to purchase by the pound.  The Cookie Walk is held in the Fellowship Hall.  You won't want to forget going upstairs to the Sunday School classrooms to check out all the tables of handcrafted items for sale.  December brings thoughts of Christmas.  Our children and youth present their Christmas program usually two Sundays before Christmas.  Our Chancel Choir presents the Christmas Cantata the Sunday before Christmas.  You won't want to miss one of the Christmas Eve services.  The 7:00 p.m. service is geared for children.  The children help Pastor Ed tell the story of the Nativity with one of the Nativity sets and of course there is lots of Christmas songs.  The 11:00 p.m. service is a candlelight-communion service.  The more traditional service is a bit more formal with the Chancel Choir singing special Christmas anthems.  Communion is offered to everyone who wants to partake as the congregation sings favorite Christmas hymns.

In February, the Youth sell Super Subs on Super Bowl Sunday.  These are a big hit every year.

In March  the United Methodist Women will again sponsor a Potato Bake.

Spring brings Easter.  During Holy Week, a Maundy Thursday service is held to remember Christ's last supper with his disciples.  On Friday there is a community Good Friday service held at one of Wakarusa's "town" churches.  Easter Sunday there is a community Sunrise Service at one of the "country" churches.  Easter Breakfast is served in our Fellowship Hall at 8:00 a.m. At the 10:00 a.m. Easter service, you will help make the Flower Cross and enjoy the Chancel Choir's Easter Cantata.

In May we honor the youth of our church who are graduating from high school, college or graduate school.

In addition to these special times, the Men's Group sponsors lunches after worship service at various times throughout the year.  The lunch varies from hot dogs and hamburgers to chili to pancakes and sausage to soup.  Whatever the meal, you can be sure it will be good and the fellowship will be great!
