Who We Are...

A Brief History of
UNIVERSITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
College Park, Maryland

University United Methodist Church started in the College Park area on October 3, 1948, when a small and determined group of people met at the University of Maryland Armory for worship and Sunday school. The Wesley Foundation director on the campus of the University of Maryland served as the minister for this group.

On May 1, 1949, the group was formally recognized as the University Methodist Church with 69 charter members. In 1951, the first unit of the church structure, a multi-purpose building, was built on Campus Drive, adjacent to the University of Maryland campus. It was duly consecrated on February 24, 1952.

Two years later on May 30, the congregation of University Methodist Church joined with Memorial Methodist Church of neighboring Hyattsville, Maryland, and became one body. Shortly afterwards, construction started on a sanctuary. A cornerstone from a nearby church dating from 1859 was used in the expansion of the church building.

Following the merger of the Methodist and the Evangelical United Brethren denominations in 1968, University Methodist Church officially changed its name to University United Methodist Church (UUMC).

Today, UUMC is a supportive fellowship of about 400 active members. Weekly activities include Sunday worship services, Christian education and fellowship events for all ages. As our name and location indicate, our ministry supports University students, faculty and staff. We also minister to the College Park and suburban Washington, D.C., communities.

You are invited to become a part of our history. Join us in our weekly celebrations of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

(Thanks to Charlotte Schramm for providing church history.)
