Ministry Action Plan for UUMC Unveiled

A comprehensive plan for ministry and action was presented to the congregation after church on Sunday, November 1. A Design Team has been working on the plan for the past six months. The Church Council approved it as “a work in progress,” recognizing that any projections for the future will need to be adjusted.

The Vision Statement remains the same: Jesus request, “Feed My People: Body, Mind and Spirit,” echoing Jesus’ instructions to Peter in John 21. The broader statement describes us at UUMC as “a living, teaching, diverse Christian community for all persons…”

Our mission is to be the “hands and spirit of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our neighborhood, our city, our world and ourselves.”

Six goals lay out new ventures for UUMC, as well as continuing effective current ministries. New ventures include:

  • Becoming an “Urban Training Center” where persons can learn how to minister and serve in the urban culture; a relationship with a seminary for students to intern at UUMC.

  • Becoming a “Teaching Church” to provide opportunities for learning to members of UUMC and the community.

  • Increasing membership by initiating invitations to 18-35 year-olds and their children; creating programs for children and parents; joining the UMC’s national advertising campaign of invitation.

  • Continuing to work on the mitigation of poverty by actively participating in the “Circles” program to help individuals move out of poverty.

  • Creating a new worship experience different in style from our existing service to meet the worship needs of other population groups.

Other goals deal with bringing financial stability to the church; worship that is “relevant and spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually stimulating; continuing our neighborhood ministries of the Breakfasts and Pantry; challenge our members to consider their legacy through contributions to our endowment.

If you are interested in helping to initiate and implement a ministry, contact Ted Finlayson-Schueler, chair of the Church Council; Lynn Steenberg, chair of the Business Administration Committee; Craig French, pastor, or any member of the Design Team: Vito Sciscioli, Don Koten, Jeanne Finlayson-Schueler, Beth Drew, Ellen Bacon, Stephanie Threatte, Dan Magowan, Deb Virgo or Nelson Price.

A copy of the plan is available through the church office. Congregation members may pick up a copy or have one mailed.

GoodSearch Good for UUMC

If you use the Internet for information searches or shopping, you could be raising money for UUMC in the process. GoodSearch.com, a Yahoo-powered search engine, donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it exactly the way you would Google or any other search engine, and because the funds generated come from GoodSearch advertisers, it doesn’t cost the designated charity a thing.

GoodSearch sister site GoodShop.com, an online shopping mall, donates an average of 3 percent (but up to 20 percent) of each sale to your selected charity. More than 900 Internet retailers—including Amazon.com, eBay, and Target— participate with GoodShop.com, at no additional cost either to you or to your charity.

Here’s how it works: When you want to search the Internet, go to www.goodsearch.com. In the “Who do you GoodSearch for” box, designate University United Methodist Church. (Note: Because several UUMC’s from other cities also participate in GoodSearch, you’ll be asked to select the appropriate one from a pop-up list.) Access GoodShop.com either via the GoodSearch site or by going directly to www.goodshop.com. Again, designate UUMC in the “Who do you GoodSearch for” box. Then click through to the merchant’s site.

For more information, go to www.goodsearch.com and click on Frequently Asked Questions.

Non-perishable food donations are always welcome as well as monetary donations. @-UUMC-on-Sunday Update - Dated 11/6/09

University Church's bi-weekly Sunday update

The holiday season is knocking on our doors. First Thanksgiving Sunday and then the beginning of Advent. Invite friends, colleagues, and neighbors to make UUMC their faith home for the holidays. Here’s what’s coming up to begin the season . . .

Saturday, November 21st

You are invited, along with all Syracuse United Methodists, to a city-wide United Methodist Thanksgiving service at Brown Memorial UM Church (corner of S. Geddes and Delaware) at 2:00 PM. Please bring an offering of a can of food.

It is possible to do both the Brown Memorial service and the S.U. game with Nelson Price and friends. If you would like more information, please contact either Pastor Craig or Nelson Price.

@ UUMC This Sunday – November 22nd – Thanksgiving Sunday

Community Church Breakfast at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.

Another Opportunity to hand in cards

While Commitment Sunday was officially last Sunday, those who have yet to hand in their cards are encouraged to bring them this Sunday.

Thanksgiving Bag Project – Phase 2

Immediately following worship will be the assembly of the bags in the Fellowship Hall for the Thanksgiving Bag Project. All the food is here, now we just need to get it into the bags for the Tuesday distribution. Many hands make light work so consider spending a half an hour after worship so we can speed through Phase 2.

Orchestra Rehearsal

At 12:00 PM will be the second rehearsal for the UUMC No-Fault Orchestra.

@ UUMC Next Sunday –  November 29th – 1st Sunday of Advent

The season of Advent, time of preparation, anticipation, and hope, begins November 29th. To observe the season, suggested Advent wreath meditations for home with the family are attached and will be included in the next Chimes. In the meantime, here is a refresher on what the Advent wreath symbolizes:

The Advent wreath, four candles on a wreath of evergreen, is shaped in a perfect circle to symbolize the eternity of God. In some churches, four purple candles, one for each week in Advent, are used with one larger white candle in the middle as the Christ candle. Other churches (like UUMC) use three purple or blue candles with one candle being rose or pink, to represent joy.

The lighting of the first candle symbolizes expectation, the second symbolizes hope, the third joy and the fourth purity. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day reminding Christians that Jesus is the light of the world.

. . . And You Should Also Know

The church will be closed on Thursday, November 26th and Friday, November 27th for the holiday with the exception of the memorial service for Lloyd McKay taking place on Friday, November 27th at 1:30 PM.

The church office staff and some church volunteers will be packaging the chickens for the Thanksgiving Bags on Monday, November 23rd. We’re not sure when the chickens are arriving, but once they do, the office will be closed until the last chicken is bagged.

► Start checking your closets - UUMC is reviving its charitable tradition of Bringing in Christmas.   On December 6th we will bring coats—new or gently used—to the communion rail as part of our Advent communion service.   The coats will be distributed to children and adults who participate in our Community Breakfast or our Food Pantry.  Please contribute and help us cover the communion rail as we share our warmth with others.
