In Service to Him,

As many of you long-time members of Union Chapel know, United Methodist pastors serve their appointed charges on a year-by-year basis. The length of service in a given church is dependent on the congregation as well as the pastor, but it’s usually limited to six years. In their January 29th meeting, your Pastor-Parish Relations Committee deliberated on whether or not to ask the bishop and cabinet for my reappointment to Union Chapel. They voted to ask me back for another year.

Likewise, I had a decision to make regarding this. It has been a process in which I sought the Lord in prayer and talked it over with my wife. Even though it has been my privilege to serve Christ as your pastor for these seven months, I have decided that I will not seek reappointment anywhere but continue in ministry as a lay person. While many of you are already aware of this, I wanted to say it again for those who were not in worship on February 1st.

With hopes of employment, I am flying to Dallas on February 16th for my final interview with a company out there. Living in Texas would provide us a means of support, proximity to my parents/grandmother, and continued opportunities for ministry. If all goes well in that interview, I will begin work on March 2nd. Your Pastor-Parish Relations Committee is already working with the Raleigh District Superintendent so he will be prepared to address this pressing ministry need when the cabinet of the North Carolina Conference meets February 16th to the 18th.

My future prayers for Union Chapel United Methodist Church will be...

    1. Put Christ first by reading your Bible and praying daily.

    2. Answer God’s call to be leaders and workers in the Church.

    3. Respond to the guidance of the Holy Spirit through your pastor.

    4. Work together as a team to develop and accomplish your Vision of Ministry.

Union Chapel is but a single church with a flickering flame of love it can share. However, when combined with other United Methodist churches in the Raleigh District, the North Carolina Conference, the United Methodist Church, and the Holy Catholic or Universal Church; it becomes part of a blazing, healing light that can rescue our lost brothers and sisters and add them to the ranks of those that Christ has called to be fishers of men.

God bless you, and God bless the people that await Christ’s ministry through you!

His humble servant,

Scott Russell Smith

Pastor

United Methodist Women

The UMW held its January meeting in the fellowship hall. Vice President Gayle Stanton called the meeting to order followed by a prayer by Marie Stone. The program consisting of seven tips for "Making Friends" was presented by Grace Woodlief. Refreshments were served by Grace to nine members including one new member - Frances Matthews. Local officer training session was held Feb. 7th from 9:30 until 12:00 at Trinity UMC on 401 N. Louisburg, NC.

United Methodist Men

According to John Frazier, the newly elected president of the UMM, there is to be a meeting in the Educational Building on Tuesday, February 17th, for dessert and a discussion as to whether or not to continue the UMM. John hopes that it will continue. (A really small group met at Beckham’s Restaurant in January.) John says the men enjoy the fellowship and the projects they promote. Therefore, he says, "I want the men to get up there, re-organize, and get busy!"

The Children’s Choir

The Children’s choir participated in the church’s Valentine party. They sang songs using sign language. Some of the children memorized Scripture verses, also.

 Sunday School Class

The Kindergarten Class

The Kindergarten Class is learning about Jesus and learning about going out and telling their friends about Jesus. The class has been having good attendance each Sunday.

The Junior Class

The Junior Class helped Mrs. Faye Moss celebrate her birthday with a Barbie birthday cake and trimmings. It was given to the class by their secret pal. Thank you. It was so good. Also Mrs. Moss had another party given by Bobbi Jean Moss and Tiffany Long. Helpers were Darrien Wilson, John Wilson, Brian Eatmon, David Pulley, Eric Faucette, and Annette Moss. The class made Valentines with candy kisses reminding each Sunday School member that "God Loves You." We also remembered our parents. We decorated our room with handmade Valentines.

Teachers: Mrs. Faye Moss & Mrs. Annette Moss

The Fuller Class

The Fuller Class will be sponsoring a covered dish supper for the entire church on Feb. 15th. For entertainment we will be presenting "Kids say the Funniest Things." Also on March 7th we will be having our spaghetti supper at the church from 5:00-7:00pm. Tickets are $5.00 for adults; $2.50 for children.

The class had its chili supper on January 10th. Good food and lots of fun were the order of the evening.

The class plans to have a fun event every month. Please come out and join us!

Recognition

Lay Person of the Year

Faye Moss has been selected as Union Chapel’s 1997 Lay Person of the year. Let us all make it a point to thank Faye and the other nominees: Virginia Pulley, Durwood Wells, and Bryant Wright, for their hard work in our church and community. The following letter is our submission nominating Faye for the District Lay Person of the year and explains why she was chosen to represent our church:

Union Chapel United Methodist Church is very proud to have Mrs. Faye Moss represent our church as a nominee for the 1997 District Lay Person of the year. In everything she does, she reflects the attitude of Christ. Mrs. Moss is a helpful, kind, and caring person. She contributes not only to our church but to those most in need, our children, senior citizens, and area orphans.

Mrs. Moss wears many hats in our church. First and foremost, Mrs. Moss is a tireless Sunday school teacher for the junior class. She always has the classroom decorated for the appropriate season and tailored to her young pupils. She also keeps her classroom well stocked in supplies. There is never a shortage of glue, scissors, or lollipops in Mrs. Moss’s class. She is a loving woman, always praising and affirming our youth. She shows our children the importance of prayer and their Sunday school lessons. Every child is encouraged to pray, and then Mrs. Moss prays for the children that they will do well in school and be loving and kind to everyone they meet.

In addition to Sunday school teacher, Mrs. Moss volunteers as one of the leaders of our children’s choir. She helped to direct our children’s Christmas program. Mrs. Moss acquired and decorated a Christmas tree for our education building. She had her class make candy kiss hand prints to give to our adult choir and to shut-ins when the children’s choir went caroling at area nursing homes. Finally, Mrs. Moss helped the junior class to deliver over 300 Christmas cards to our church members.

Mrs. Moss leads by example as a committed worker in the community. She collected old eye glasses for missionaries to take to the Ukraine. And she collected coats and toys to take to the orphanage in Oxford where she visits several times a year.

Mrs. Moss has done all of these things while helping to care for her daughter, who had to move back home following an automobile accident last fall. All of these actions reflect the attitude of Christ and is why Mrs. Faye Moss was chosen to represent Union Chapel United Methodist Church for the 1997 District Lay Person of the year.

Apportionments

I have only been the Finance Chair for a few days, but this is one issue we must begin addressing now. The apportioned amount we must pay this year is $12,333. This amount represents an increase of $4333 over the previous year, because we accepted 100% of our apportionments for 1998, and we had only accepted 61.74% in 1997. In other words to reach this obligation we need to bring in $237.17 each week for 52 weeks. I must remind you this is in addition to our regular operating expenses.

Based on this Kathy and I are making a challenge to 100 people in the church (actually 98 other people). If 100 people will give $2.00 each week in 52 weeks we would have $10,400 or 84.33% of our apportionments. $2.00 each week calculates into a cost of 28.6 cents per day. Therefore I encourage you to accept this challenge.

If you wish to join in, all you need to do is place $2.00 in an envelope and write conference or apportionments or mark a "C" or "A."

Thank you, Paul Faucette

Committee on Finance Chairperson

Union Chapel’s Outreach Ministries Need Your Help

Historically, Union Chapel has provided outreach ministry to various persons in the community. This past month food and food vouchers were taken to families, and we also carried prepared food to the family of Durwood Dement to assist them as they mourn his passing. In addition to these opportunities we have to share God’s love with our brothers and sisters in the community, I feel we need to immediately put in place support for those requirements listed below. It is my hope that each of us as members of Union Chapel will come together and successfully accomplish this endeavor.

Transportation: Provide transportation if necessary for those unable to drive, unable to drive at night, weather related, illness, numerous trip requirements to doctors and hospitals, secure prescribed medications, grocery purchases, child pickup, church attendance, scheduled meeting attendance, visitation, funerals and weddings.

Cassettes: Distribution to shut-ins of church services, Bible readings, and other church related activities

Family Support: Provide support for families who are forced to leave one family member or members at home due to sickness or other emergency requirements

Those in Need: Continue to supply and distribute food, food vouchers, and clothing in support of those in need

If you can assist in providing these outreach ministries to our church and surrounding neighborhoods, please me in order that we might immediately respond to whatever the need might be (492-1563).

Thank you, Durwood Wells
