PRESIDENTS' SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES As a President of a local unit of United Methodist Women you have special responsibilities! You probably know the basic rules that: 1) Presidents are elected by the local unit for a term of office determined by the unit (usually 2 years), but limited to four consecutive years. She must, by Discipline, be a member of the local congregation of The United Methodist Church. |

2) Presidents preside at all meetings of the unit and its executive committee the "Mission Team". 3) Presidents participate in and encourage participation of members in district and conference activities of United Methodist Women. 4) Presidents are members of the Church Council, Charge Conference and all committees of UMW except the Committee on Nominations. However, you have additional Special Responsibilities! From "Guidelines for Leading Your Congregations" we are reminded that UMW Presidents have a task calling for executive ability, organizational knowledge, and a gift for effective human relations. You must become familiar with all resources, informed on issues, and fully acquainted with the local unit, the district and conference organizations of United Methodist Women. Because you preside at all meetings of the unit, you will need an adequate knowledge of parliamentary procedure so that business can be conducted efficiently. You represent United Methodist Women to your local church. In your reports to the Church Council or the Administrative Board, be sure to present a clear picture of the total scope of the work, program, and policies of United Methodist Women. This includes building an awareness of the process of worship, education, leadership development, and action being carried out not just in your church, but at the district and conference levels. I think it is wonderful when the UMW President and or Coordinator for Social Action serves on the Mission Committee of the Church. You can be instrumental in helping your church to develop its strategy for mission as well as being a great resource! Grace & Peace, Beverly Wilson Corpus Christi District UMW President |
