SANDY RESPONSE IN NY, NJ, MD AND WV
New York Conference: Registration is through their website www.nyac.com They have 5 sites that are hosting
teams. Team members must be at least 18 years of age due to local governmental restrictions. Case management
training just took place this past week so that the process of identifying clients for the rebuilding can begin.
The delay of government funding, Winter, code regulations, rebuilding guidelines, and Union opposition has led
to many challenges. The conference staff is trying to increase capacity for teams and the corresponding hosting but
it will take time. Please don't try and challenge the age rule - it is not negotiable.
Greater NJ Conference: Registration is through their website www.afuturewithhope.org or simply emailing Disasterresponse@gnjumc.org
Due to local code, lack of community organizations, governmental restrictions, Unions, etc. - the response by rebuilding teams is
still being decided and planned. It is still uncertain as to what the capacity will be as the area moves into rebuilding.
Some teams are being calendared in a very limited capacity. The Disaster Recovery staff is working hard to field all the
requests for placement by teams making certain that viable work exists for those who are invited to serve through the
conference process. Age limits are still being decided upon by locality .
PenDel Conference: Registration is through email to umcorteamcrisfield@comcast.net . The response is limited to Crisfield MD which
sustained heavy flooding due to Sandy. Capacity is only 20-30 team members per week and case management is being conducted by
local community resources. Housing is in a local UMC. The Recovery team is trying to increase capacity while staying within the
rebuilding process set up by the community recovery committee. Age limit is currently 16 yoa.
West Virginia Conference: Damage and flooding occurred due to large amounts of snowfall from Hurricane Sandy.
