Three trees and a corn Mill |
|
"Beginning at a Sassafras on the North Side of the road leading to Corn Mill, thence west 70 yards to an elm, thence north 70 yards to a white oak, thence 70 yards to a red bud, thence south to the beginning." - Signed: Robert Smith; Rutherford County Court; July 1, 1816 - Deed describing land sold to the Methodist Episcopal Church In 1812, The Society of Thomas Jarratt began holding regular meetings in the Jarratt home. During this time, camp meetings were held yearly at the Windrow Farm near present day Salem. The Jarratt’s and Smith’s, recognizing the need for a permanent church, organized for a log church to the built. In 1843 the log building was replaced with a brick building at the same location. In 1903 funding allowed for the present building to be built using many of the original brick materials in the process. Sometime during the 1950’s, Sunday School rooms were added and then was expanded into a Fellowship Hall in 1994. Since then, multiple enhancements to the building and equipment has been done to help preserve the church’s heritage and open up opportunities in Worship. Today various uses of technology are used to modernize the traditional services Salem members enjoy. To date, Salem Church is in the planning stages to add a multi-purpose Fellowship Hall, Sunday School classrooms, industrial kitchen, and administrative offices. |
