Q:Who is welcome to join the Wesley Foundation?
A:
Everyone!
"Open hearts, open minds, open doors" is the message of the United
Methodist Church, and the message of the Wesley Foundation. Although we
are the United Methodist Campus Ministry, you do not need to be a member
of the United Methodist Church, or even any church at all. We are a
diverse group of students who come from different faith backgrounds. In
2007, after many years of discussion, the United Methodist Campus
Ministry voted to become a Reconciling ministry. The following is our
statement:
The United Methodist Campus Ministry (aka "The Wesley
Foundation") at the University of Maryland, College Park, affirms Christ's
call to engage in ministries that bring reconciliation and wholeness to
all persons. Our hearts, minds, and doors are always open to individuals
of all races, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and
theological identities. We strive to be a community of spiritual growth
that reflects compassion towards all God's children, engaging in prophetic
and pastoral outreach to Church and society.
Q: What kind of Bible study does the Wesley Foundation have?
A:
Wednesday evenings are a time for students to gather together in the
lounge of Memorial Chapel. Dinner (read:
free food!) is served
beginning at 5:00 pm -- a great alternative to dining hall food or
cooking. Bible study goes from 6:00 pm until about 7:00 pm.
If you've never even picked up a Bible in your life, don't worry.
There are no quizzes! Come and join us for a practical, open, and
faith-based discussion, led by Rev. Kim Capps. Since we are a group with
members of different faith backgrounds, we are able to learn from one
another, as well as directly from scripture.
Q: Where does the Wesley Foundation gather for worship?
A:
The Wesley Foundation gathers Sundays at University United Methodist
Church. There is a traditional worship service at both 8:30 and 11 am and
a contemporary service at 5:30 pm. Following the contemporary service
(around 6:30 pm), students gather for dinner (
more free food!),
followed by a Sunday evening discussion.
Join the Wesley Foundation and the College Park community in worship
at University United Methodist Church (UUMC). UUMC is our sponsoring
church, and is located behind the campus along Campus Drive, across from
parking lot 1 (
map).
Q: Where can I participate in service activities?
A:
Students in Service and Action is the Wesley
Foundation's Student Service Initiative. By taking action in the community
and serving others, we are able to share our faith while growing
spiritually.
On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, students volunteer at
nearby Hill Haven Nursing Home, working with both residents of the nursing
home and those who are in assisted living.
On the second Saturday, students participate in such activities as the
Walk for the Homeless, Project Linus, Habitat for Humanity, and church
workdays at UUMC.
For more information on our service activities, please e-mail

Q: How can someone with an interest in music get involved?
A:
Harmony's Cross, our contemporary Christian choir,
is open to anyone who wishes to sing or play an instrument. Harmony's
Cross is made up not only of members of the Wesley Foundation, but also of
students of other campus groups. The group is open to anyone who wishes to
sing, or play an instrument. Practices are on Wednesday evenings from 7:30
to 9:00pm and are held at Memorial Chapel.
For more information, please e-mail
Erika Kallio or
Rebecca Selzer.
Also, UUMC has several musical options open to students. They are
welcome to join the Aldersgate (church) Choir and the Handbell Choir,
which play at the 11:00 am traditional service. Students who are
interested are also welcome to join the Praise Band, which plays at the
contemporary worship service.
