Grace in 1992
Posted  1st October 2000
To start the 1992 year, Grace Church changed its administrative structure from the council form to a Council on Ministries and an Administrative Board.  Part-time staff members were Susan Meriedth and Deborah Lynch.  At the beginning of 1992, church membership was 426.  UMW Sunday was held in January 1992.  UMW President was Maudie Taylor.  Once again Grace observed "Souper Bowl" Sunday.  In February 1992, the slogan "Glorifying God at Grace" was adopted.  The Agape' circle hosted a Valentine luncheon for the ladies of the Grace Class.  The stained glass window in the Prayer Chapel was dedicated.  In March 1992, three Girl Scout troops were present for Girl Scout Sunday.  The church enjoyed a family night of bowling.  A six-week class on The Beatitudes, led by Fredna Akin, began.  Members supplied and packed food boxes for shipment to Russia.  Over 400 boxes filled the fellowship hall as Grace acted as the district depot.

In April 1992, Grace was one of the sponsors of the Jay Strack Crusade.  This was the second visit of the crusade to Ruston.  Rev. Bill Willis preached at the community Holy Week services.  The cantata was "Come See the Place."  The Cherub Choir sang on Easter Sunday.  In May 1992, Julia Williams from the Mission Society for United Methodists was guest speaker at a missions weekend.  The children presented the musical "Jumping Jehosophat."  In June 1992, after seven years at Grace, Rev. Larry Miller and his family were appointed to Denham Springs UMC.  The church welcomed our new parsonage family, Jack and Mandy O'Dell.  In July 1992, 1st through 6th graders enjoyed Kingdom Kamp.  Habitat for Humanity began building their fourth local home.  In September 1992, a second Sunday service began in the 8:30 am time slot.  Sunday Night Live featured a meal and then a choice of study or worship groups.  Grace members contributed items to help victims of Hurricane Andrew.  In September 1992, a Sunday School Roundup was held.  The family night supper that evening had a western theme.  Phil and Michele Spottswood, missionaries to Kazakhstan, shared with the church, and the youth raised $400 at a cake auction.  Meda Killgore lead a 10 week course on parenting.  Caney Lake Camp was the site of a Council on Ministries retreat.

In October 1992, David Burns came on staff as Director of Education and Youth Ministries.  The church began supporting the work of Dwight Ramsey in Russia and Austin and Mary Boggan in Paraguay.  The Christmas Cantata was "The First Noel."  UMW held their Christmas Party on the 14th December.  In December 1992, Deborah Lynch left to accompany Rev. Dwight Ramsey on a mission trip to Russia.
