"Souper
Bowl" Sunday 1989 was the day to bring canned food for Christian
Community
Action (CCA). "Fish" banks were used to collect the Lenten
offering
for hunger ministries. The youth raised $1,000 at the Chicken
Spaghetti
Supper. The Easter Cantata was "Easter Song."
After six months in planning,
Grace Church
and many of its members participated in the Jay Strack Crusade which
was
held at the Thomas Assembly Center 9th to 14th April 1989. In May
1989, the church was host to a very special treat as a group of Grace
"actors"
presented the play God's Favorite, a humorous adaptation of the life of
Job. The play was directed by Mary Carol Friedrich. The
cast
included Larry Miller and Joy Lowe. Among the members of the
confirmation
class were Ben McFadden and Emily Taylor. Graduating Seniors
included
Michelle and Kira Lowe and Ann Pierce.
While Rev. Miller was on summer
vacation, Bill
Willis, the new Children's Home Chaplain, led the morning
service.
The Junior and Senior High MYFers took a trip to Panama City.
Back
by popular demand, the Talent/No Talent show made a return visit.
Fred Higginbotham completed certification as a Lay Speaker.
Grace Church celebrated its
second year as
a partner church in the Potato Project. The $1500 raised for the
project was enough money to ship an 18 wheeler of potatoes from the
field
to a hunger ministry. Julia Williams spoke at Grace about the
Methodist
Mission Society. Rita Hamblin and Frances Morgan provided an
organ
and piano concert for the fall family night supper. Classes at
the
fall session of WOW included Bible Geography led by Ralph Pierce, and a
missions emphasis class led by Wayne and Nelda Herren featuring
Christian
Community Action, Methodist Childrens Home, Habitat for Humanity, and
Heifer
Project. Members supplied their favorite recipes for a Grace
Missions
Cookbook. Proceeds went to the Potato Project. The youth
collected
cans for missions projects and spent two Saturdays doing yard work for
our elderly members.
The Hanging of the Greens
kicked off the Advent
season. The Friendship Club enjoyed a turkey dinner and a program
by the preschool children. The Christmas Cantata was "Sing and
Rejoice."
Tom Logan sang at the family night supper. The year ended with
the
Candlelight and Communion Service and a New Year's Eve Covenant Service.
