Grace in 1984
Posted  6th August 2000
The year got off to a wet start when bitterly cold weather caused a pipe in the attic to burst.  Fortunately, members preparing for the Watch Night Service discovered and contained the flood, averting widespread damage.  The year 1984 was the Bicentennial Year of American Methodism.  January 8th was the anniversary of the first service in our new building.  There was a special commemoration during the morning service.  On 22nd January 1984, the UMW conducted the evening service in observance of their 100th anniversary.

In March 1984, a Church-wide Supper featured the slide presentation of the Costa Rican workcampers.  Donna Shankles returned from the Louisiana Tech Wesley Foundation to lead our morning services on 25th March.

April 8th was the date for a Senior High UMYF Baked Potato Luncheon.  The Chancel Choir presented the Easter Cantata, "Behold Your King," on 15th April 1984.  On 29th April, the congregation celebrated with an evening activity time - games, sandwiches, drinks, and cookies were enjoyed.

The Senior High UMYF participated in an overnight retreat at Lake Claiborne led by Rev. Doug Williams.  The Chicken Spaghetti Supper earned the Church Van Fund $1,200.  On May 19th, 1984, the UMYF participated in a workday sponsored by the HELP agency.  Work included the repair of a porch and front step on a local home.  May 20th, 1984, brought a Spring Covered Dish with a "Talent/No Talent" night.

The church family enjoyed an evening of outside activity followed by homemade ice cream on 17th June 1984.  In September 1984, Grace Church hosted a reception for our new Ruston District Superintendent and our former pastor, Henry Blount.  New members joining Grace in 1984 included the Tolivers and the Hickmans.

The Fall Family Night Supper featured a musical program by Mack and Shayla Blake.  In October 1984, the Covenant Players returned to perform three plays in celebration of the Bicentennial of American Methodism.

The UMW Christmas party was held at the parsonage.  The Christmas Cantata was "The Song of Christmas."  The Grace Puppeteers presented "Christmas with the Puppets" directed by Joy Lowe and Barbara Mason at the Christmas Family Night Supper.  The year ended with the Candlelight Service.
