In
January, 1982, Joy Lowe organized a puppet ministry at Grace. A
contest
was held to name the group. The prize was a Sweep the Kitchen
pizza
from Johnny's Pizza. There is no evidence that the prize was
collected.
Also in January, two prayer study groups began meeting weekly in
member's
homes.
Boy Scout Sunday was held in
February 1982
for Troop and Pack 59. Perry Lowe was the Scoutmaster. At a
family night supper, Jack Moran and Bob Jones shared their experience
at
the Honduras Workcamp.
In March 1982, the Chicken
Spaghetti Supper
raised $1700. On March 26th, the Grace Church family lost a long
time member, Claude Ruple.
In April 1982, Choir Director Gary
Keen led
the Chancel Choir in their Easter Cantata. Eight new members
joined
the church through the confirmation class. Bids for the new
church
were opened. Larkco Construction was low bidder.
In May 1982, the Children's
Choir presented
the musical "Jesse's Boy" at a family night supper, and a ground
breaking
for our new church building was held.
In June 1982, the Wonderful
Wednesdays children's
program began and ran all summer. A 2nd Sunday Night vesper
service
was also started.
By September 1982, Grace had
decided to be
part of another workcamp to Roatan, Honduras. UMW supported the
work
camp with a rummage sale, and UMM held a chili supper. The group
going to Honduras was Jack Moran, Bob Jones, Rita Hamblin, Chip Lowe,
and
Wes Lynch. Grace Church exceeded their goal of $8,000 and raised
$11,500 for this project.
December 1982 events included
the UMW Christmas
Party, a family night supper, the Christmas Cantata with Ralph Pierce
as
interim director, a Ruston Public High School Choir concert, and a
Christmas
Eve Candlelight service. On 26th December 1982, the workteam left
Shreveport bound for Roatan, honduras, to build a church building and
to
do medical/dental work at Saint Helena. It was on this work camp
that Chip Lowe discovered and named the now famous "Scuba Pig," and
Mrs.
Rita taught the children the Hokey Pokey.
