50th Anniversary Committee
Grace in 1978
Posted  18th June 2000
A Covenant Service for new church officers was conducted on 8th January 1978.  A team from Tech Wesley Foundation led the morning worship on 22nd January.

Our Building Fund Crusade began in February 1978.  Rev. William Erwin arrived in March to direct the crusade.  He conducted several training sessions for our visitation teams and led our worship services on 5th March and 12th March.  The visitation teams contacted our membership and invited them to pledge toward our $150,000 goal for our building project.  A very happy Victory Celebration was held on Monday, 13th March, to report that we had exceeded our goal---$152,507 was pledged.

Spring activities included the Lenten Cantata on Palm Sunday, serving as the host church for the Community Holy Week Services, and presenting a 13 week Bible Study entitled "The Heart of the Bible."

Rev. Ray Branton guided the church in a workshop with the theme "A New Future for Grace" in April 1978.  New and expanded program ideas were discussed, and a church mission statement was prepared.

Special children's recreational programs were planned for Tuesdays beginning 13th June.  Susan Meriedth lead successful Vacation Bible School in late June with 39 children attending.

The Building Committee presented building plans at a church conference on 6th August 1978.  The congregation approved the architect's plans and authorized the committee to offer the present church property on Tech Drive for sale.

It was with great sadness that the congregation learned of the sudden death of Rev. Leon Scott on 8th August 1978.

The Chancel Choir presented a Christmas Cantata, "A Song Unending," at the morning worship service on 17th December 1978.  At the end of 1978, the membership of Grace Church was reported at 403.
